They say that love makes the world go ‘round. If so, then Christians have a great responsibility. Jesus told us what No Greater Love looks like. He showed that love to us by loving us that way. Now, we are to demonstrate that same kind of love to others. In this passage we learn how Jesus loves us.

One of the greatest, simplest, most profound truths in all the world is that God loves you. He perfectly demonstrated that love by sending Jesus to die a substitutionary, atoning death on the cross for you. HE now calls upon us to love Him in return with all our hearts AND to love others that same way. How can I possibly love like Jesus loves? There is no greater love than His.

We know that Jesus said that without Him we could do nothing. Nevertheless, we attempt to do nearly everything without Him. We may pray about a situation, but we tackle it as if it all depended on us. We would be fruitful if we would abide in Him and allow Him to live His life, His will, His purposes through us.

There may not be a more beautiful picture of our relationship with Christ than Jesus provides in John 15, where He is the vine and we are the branches. His illustration describes a living relationship, a fruitful relationship. He describes what our relationship ought to be. And a theme that runs through His depiction is the word, abide.

Of the seven I AM statements from Jesus in the Gospel of John, one of the most prolific is “I am the True Vine.” He names for us all the parts of His illustration: He is the Vine; God the Father is the Vinedresser; and we are the Branches. His explanation of the activity and necessity of the vine and the vinedresser to the branches is profound. He reminds us that we are to be utterly dependent upon Him in this life.

The faith-filled heritage of the United States is well-documented. God raised up leaders and patriots whom we know refer to as our Forefathers. They paved the way for our independence as a nation, but they did it because of their dependence upon God and the leadership of the Holy Spirit. If they were so dependent upon Him then, we should certainly be dependent upon Him today.

Gnats and flies can ruin a picnic. You spend more time shooing them away than you do enjoying your lunch and enjoying your company. At least, they are just a nuisance. Our passage today mentions something far worse than a mere irritation. Vultures came down on Abram’s sacrifice, and he had to shoo them away. We can learn a lot about waiting on the Lord while we shoo away the enemies.

Waiting frustrates us. Sitting in a waiting room at the doctor’s office. Waiting on that check to come in the mail. Even waiting at a red light. But learning to wait on God is vitally important. We are told to wait on Him over a hundred times in the Bible. Why? In part, He is using that waiting time to prepare us. So, learn how to Wait On and how to Wave Off.
