We welcome Ade, Karl, Kwasi, Michael and Rob to the table to break bread, chew the fat and serve up some food for thought. As expected, our Host and dinner guests get right to it. The conversation opens with the table exploring the media’s newfound taste in chocolate-skinned men. The Black community still deals with colourism, but are men like Daniel Kaluuya and Damson Idris really changing the game for dark-skinned Black men? Are dark-skinned Black men an acquired taste or just the flavour of the month?  

The table also discusses Idris Elba’s comments about no longer being referred to as a Black actor. What impact do his comments have on Black men who are supporters of his and have to navigate the world of work, if any? Are Idris’ words and perspectives helpful or harmful? The South London Chapter of the #DarkSkinnedSociety speak with their minds and says everything with their chests.

Right before we launch Episode 7 in just under 30 minutes, we’re once again going deep behind the scenes of BRKIN Bread. This is our first specially curated table, and we’re joined by five new guests: Ade, Karl, Kwasi, Michael and Rob. In typical BRKIN Bread fashion, our dinner guests weren’t briefed on the discussion topics beforehand. Even though there was a little trepidation in the air, our dinner guests bonded quickly and got comfortable. All dinner guests are football fans, so they were checking scores and pledging allegiance to their teams before the feast kicked off.

The three courses went down a treat and our dinner guests kept the conversation going even after the table was cleared. The group were very reflective of the experience at BRKIN Bread. Camille expressed her desire to eat with and have more conversations with different people in the future. Onu felt positively challenged by being put on the spot and having to take a position. Lara found all the differing viewpoints refreshing and Paul, never one to sit on the fence, appreciated the opportunity to consider all viewpoints. A lot was discussed, but did our guests leave on friendly terms and would they break bread with each other again?

Host Sabrina Clarke and her dinner guests, Camille, Lara, Onu and Paul, gather around the dinner table to talk about racism and the Homes for Ukraine scheme. In a recent Channel 4 report some Ukrainian refugees are finding it difficult to live among their ethnically and religiously diverse neighbours. Our guests have a lot to say about this. On Sunday, 12th March 2023, former Liverpool Football star, John Barnes engaged in a heated debate on LBC radio with host Andrew Castle about the Ukrainian refugee crisis and Britain’s response to it. There were many important points discussed including the aforementioned migration plan, safety and more. Barnes thinks it is important to consider why news stories about the suffering of Ukrainians have resonated with the British public more than that of Syrians and Iraqi refugees.

Host Sabrina Clarke is joined by her special dinner guests, Camille, Lara, Onu and Paul to discuss the hot topic of Ukrainian refugees coming to the UK. Understandably, the debate sparked some hardline points based on principles and personal experiences. There were also poignant reflections and a change in position. The discussion was filled with ideas around free will, autonomy and even entitlement. Between the nuanced perspectives are healthy servings of grace, compassion and humour… as always!

Background:

On Thursday, 14th April 2022, the UK government announced a new migration plan. The initiative could see some people who came to the UK without a visa or other permission to enter the country sent to Rwanda to have their asylum claim processed and decided there. On Monday, 19th December 2022, the High Court ruled that the plan is lawful.

As a result of Russia invading Ukraine in 2022, a number of Ukrainian people have come to the UK as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme. However, as highlighted in a recent Channel 4 report, some Ukrainian refugees are struggling to co-exist in an ethnically diverse Britain.

For Episode 4, Host Sabrina Clarke is joined by four new dinner guests who came hungry for conversation and great food. Sabrina’s new dinner guests are Camille, Lara, Onu and Paul. The conversation took flight quickly as the table discussed whether they prefer aisle or window seats when they travel via aeroplane. The group was divided, but what the question did open up were themes of control, perspective, and access to space both literally and figuratively. The group were also asked about what airline they think is the best and the answers were varied. Comfort or catalogue? Treats or travel destinations?
