Broadway Block: a podcast about the New York Rangers

After a very ideal start on the west coast road trip, we chat with Kraken Radio play by play announcer Mike Benton to review the game and the young season. With Jonathan Quick's shutout win over Seattle, the Ranger's back-up netminder moves to 22-6-2 lifetime in New York, and boasts his second shutout of the season in back-to-back games. Mike chat's with us from his perspective, as this was a real gut-check game for both teams. From the Kraken's point of view, the New York Rangers represent a good litmus test for any bubble team making a playoff push. On the other hand, the Kraken represent a hungry team that isn't going to make life easy on you. In hindsight, it was a great way to get Quick some reps, and Igor a game vs. Vancouver.

The Rangers have flip flopped their goalies in an effort to spark something in Igor, who has struggled of late given all of the defensive issues. With a 8-2-1 start to the season, the Rangers record may appear to be better than it really is. One can't help but wonder if the defensive insufficiencies are being masked by Igor's fantastic play. It seems apparent that Mika is still kind of off, yet he's at nearly a point per game pace. What's more impressive is each line is contributing, including both power play units, 5v5 and short handed. After a tough loss to the Caps, who were clearly out for revenge following a sweep in last seasons playoffs at the hands of the New York Rangers, the team looks to bounce back in what looks to be a very important stretch of points for the Rangers. The next 4 games are against opponents ranked 6th, 6th, 5th, and 4th in their divisions respectively. The positives? Essentially everyone not named Mika Zibanejad.

The New York Rangers sit themselves on the top of the league as one of the absolute teams to contend with right out of the gate. If you've been following the show, then you'll know this was certainly on our radar before the season began, as we were both of the mindset that this core still had quite a lot to prove. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't bet against Igor in the regular season of a contract year. He's playing the most inspired hockey of his career, and personally, I hope we back up the Brink's truck. He's worth every penny.

After a wild win to start the season and a rocky game to the surging UHC, the New York Rangers played a pretty good game against Detroit and sit at the top of the division- unbeaten in regulation. On paper, it's about as good of a start as they could have asked for, having outscored their opponents 15 - 7 with 11 separate goal scorers.
