Broadway Block: a podcast about the New York Rangers

After the devastating loss of Igor Shesterkin, the team has come back in an inspiring way, winning by a combined scored of 10-3 in their last two games, extending their home record to 5-0 in an undefeated run at MSG, and giving fans a reason to believe everything will be alright. Dylan Garand deserves a lot of credit, but a huge part of that success is the team in front of him and their willingness to put down the tissue box, and lace up their skates. They've built an identity, and been rewarded for their efforts. Now, can the New York Rangers take advantage of their schedule in the coming weeks and start making deposits in the standings to pay them dividends as the season grows on?

After one of the worst seasons in my 24 years of being a fan of the New York Rangers, the team goes through the offseason with grace and seems to have come out on the other side in better shape. Starting the year right where they left off, they were shutout in their opener but since that loss to the Bruins, the Rangers are 4-0 to start the month of October undefeated, and have gained a lot of momentum into this young season. Speaking of young, with the addition of Cole Beaudoin, the Rangers are now the youngest team in the NHL while boating the best record in league standings. After all we went through recently, Rangers fans deserve to look forward to watching a fun game.

When it comes to home openers, I don't think you could have made a better statement win than the Rangers did last night. Highlighted hugely by a goal from Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers absolutely dominated that game from start to finish. They did take a handful of untimely penalties, but they worked hard to get back to even strength and never allowed the game to slip away from them. The home crowd was a huge factor, and probably the loudest I've heard that building since they were playing in the deep rounds of the playoffs.

The NHL preseason is right around the corner, and today we finally got a taste of training camp rosters and footage from the action. In a somewhat surprising last minute offseason addition, the Rangers went out and signed unrestricted free agent Eeli Tolvanen to a 1 year deal to round out what I would consider to be a great offseason. Tolvanen is a former first round pick who has eclipsed 20 goals before, is tough on the puck, and plays a physical brand of hockey. I think the signing will be good for the Rangers if they can get the most out of him and is certainly a low-risk move. As we get closer and closer to the season starting, it's starting to feel like this team has a real opportunity to improve their poor results from last year.

Fresh off recording an episode with Locked on Rangers, we delve further into the hot button topics of conversation this off season so far. We share our thoughts on Pavel Dorofeyev as we start to have an idea of what the top lines could look like. We speculate on the 3rd and 4th lines and give our best ideas as far as what they might look like. We also zoom in on the glut of defenseman the roster currently has, with guys like Vaakanainen and more recent top picks like Fortescue and Smits currently on the outside looking in. Come deadline, I would expect the team moves on from a Schneider, Vaakanainen, or Robertson to make headway for the laundry list of defense currently not on the roster, with Morrow representing a piece I'd also be comfortable moving on from.
