For the past year, the Dakota Access Pipeline (ETP) in collaboration with the North Dakota State police force have been trampling upon the constitutional, human, and civil rights of his people. In this episode Cannupa shares through childhood memory, what Standing Rock means to him as a place where he simply goes home to. He also shares the story behind the namesake Standing Rock and the complexity of all Indigenous story which is overlooked in our popular culture. Cannupa speaks about the organic nature of the water protector camps, the evolution of the movement and the relationship of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to this now global movement. Cannupa also tells us about his experience as artist and water protector, participating in what ways he is able to create collaboration and empowerment for his people through artwork and actions such as the mirror shield project.

Kim Smith is a Todích'íí'nii (Bitterwater clan) woman from St Michaels Arizona. As a woman of a water clan she holds her responsibilities to water dear and has dedicated her life to protecting water & her homelands from resource extraction. For the past 10 years her organizing efforts include art activism, raising awareness about resource extraction on the Diné Nation, water rights, food sovereignty, permaculture & indigenous empowerment in efforts to uphold many inherit responsibilities. As a young Diné woman looking at personal and political choices she makes efforts according to her cultural teachings and values; thinking and behaving in a way that is consistent to the teachings of ancestors and with the laws of nature. In an effort to restore balance to the land and community. Kim is also a board member for Honor the Earth & Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment ( Diné CARE) two pioneer indigenous environmental organizations. Kim is also the curator for a national traveling exhibition called, "The Art of Indigenous Resistance".

I had the opportunity to travel to Standing Rock, North Dakota last week to deliver supplies from New Mexico to the water protectors currently on the front lines. Although my stay was very short with a specific trajectory of supply delivery, I took an afternoon to walk around Camp of the Sacred Stones and listen to story from folks who have joined in solidarity and support of this movement. I simply started walking through the camp, with no real proposed outcome, not looking for anyone in particular to speak with. But, wanting simply to engage with the human beings who had come, had made the journey to be here, and listen to why. I found myself engaged in conversation with many brilliant and activated protectors of water. Lakota peoples with ties to the very land the Dakota Access Pipeline is trying to penetrate and disrupt. A first hand account of the initial arrests that had recently occurred and which halted the construction, was also shared with me. I spoke with a Maori water protector, and I found myself engaged in deep conversation with a group of activated protectors from Hawai’i, who had come to stand strong with the movement in recognition of what the importance water or ‘wai' holds for all human beings. The conversations you will hear in this podcast episode are of a moment in time, an afternoon of story and reflection, and I hope they may give us a reminder of the power of collective consciousness. These conversations took place during the simple and powerful act of being present and speak to what is at the core of this fight; that water is life. More about the Water Protectors movement and the Dakota Access Pipeline: People from across all nations of turtle island and the globe have joined Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s movement against a $3.8 billion four-state oil pipeline that if implemented will disturb sacred sites and impact drinking water for over 8,000 tribal members, not to mention the millions of people further downstream and which would pass through Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota and South Dakota. For several months, thousands of people have been taking part in peaceful resistance at the Camp of the Sacred Stones and the Red Warrior camp in North Dakota. About 30 people have been arrested in recent weeks and direct action and non-violent resistance have successfully stopped construction to this point. This episode completes the series regarding the #callresponse project and provides interviews and reflections from the culminating exhibition held at grunt gallery in October 2016 with guest respondents, accompanying programming, and a catalogue. Moving between specific sites, online space and the gallery, #callresponse focuses on forms of performance, process and translation. An online platform utilizing the hashtag #callresponse on social media connects the geographically diverse sites and provides opportunities for networked exchanges. A dedicated project website will act as an online hub (to be launched October 2016) with artist statements, documentation, contributions from invited respondents, and integrated social media, including a series of interviews with the lead artists and their respondents on the Broken Boxes Podcast. #callresponse is produced in partnership with grunt gallery and generously supported by the British Columbia Arts Council and the conciliation initiative of the Canada Council for the Arts, the J.W.
