Janir is re-introduced to the adoptive father she can't remember, but their already stilted meeting is overshadowed by the machinations of the sorceress Zhamarza.

The Chalice of Malvron is destroyed and Janir is adjusting to life as a guest of a Brevian lord alongside a convalescing Saoven. But a messenger from her foster-father brings news revealing that the war isn't over yet.

The Chalice is destroyed and Brevia is saved, but Saoven is still a prisoner and Janir has only a gangly enchanter to help her rescue him.

Janir has committed to her course and thrown in her lot with the Brevians, but the race is on to see if she can destroy the Chalice of Malvron before she is stopped by the Argetallam soldiers.

Found out by her father and Kenistrith, Janir is subjected to torture as the Argetallams try to break her mind a second time. But finding a way to resist their torments is the only way to save her mother’s country and the man she loves. 

Janir finally reaches a breaking point and chooses to face the mysteries surrounding the elf prisoner, Saoven. She goes to see him in secret, but under the watchful eye of her father’s Argetallams, nothing stays secret for long.

Janir's ghostly memories become harder and harder to ignore. With the immortal Stlavish army bearing down on Brevia, she finds herself cornered into making a choice and asking hard questions.

As Janir continues to struggle with the conflicting narratives and inconsistencies around her, a conversation with her brother only confirms what she knows in her heart.

Janir's elvish captors unexpectedly release her after vague insinuations and hints at a greater conspiracy. When she returns to the Argetallam camp, she finds her heart and mind more conflicted than ever.

Janir is captured by two elves searching for Saoven and they demand answers.
