Nl: De winterzon scheen zacht door het grote raam van de psychiatrische afdeling.
En: The winter sun shone softly through the large window of the psychiatric ward.

Nl: Buiten lagen hoopjes sneeuw langs de paden.
En: Outside, piles of snow lay along the paths.

Nl: Binnen was het stil, op het geroezemoes van stemmen in de verte na.
En: Inside, it was quiet, except for the murmuring of voices in the distance.

Nl: Niels en Sanne zaten aan een tafel in de gemeenschappelijke ruimte, wachtend tot Bram hen zou komen vergezellen.
En: Niels and Sanne sat at a table in the common room, waiting for Bram to come join them.

Nl: Niels keek rond.
En: Niels looked around.

Nl: De muren waren wit, de meubels eenvoudig.
En: The walls were white, the furniture simple.

Nl: Hier en daar stonden planten die het kille interieur een beetje leven probeerden te geven.
En: Here and there were plants trying to bring some life to the cold interior.

Nl: Hij voelde de spanning in zijn lijf.

En: After a few minutes, Bram came in.

Nl: Zijn blik was helder, maar zijn passen voorzichtig.
En: His gaze was clear, but his steps were cautious.

Nl: Hij zette zich bij hen neer, een vermoeide glimlach op zijn gezicht.
En: He sat down with them, a tired smile on his face.

Nl: "Hoi," zei hij.
En: "Hi," he said.

Nl: Het gesprek begon aarzelend, met koetjes-en-kalfjeszaken.
En: The conversation started hesitantly, with small talk.

Nl: Maar Niels had een doel.
En: But Niels had an aim.

Nl: Hij wilde weten hoe het echt met Bram ging.
En: He wanted to know how Bram really was.

Nl: "Hoe gaat het echt met je, Bram?"
En: "How are you really, Bram?"

Nl: vroeg hij en keek zijn broer recht in de ogen.
En: he asked, looking his brother straight in the eyes.

Nl: Bram zuchtte diep.
En: Bram sighed deeply.

Nl: "Soms zwaar," gaf hij toe.
En: "Sometimes hard," he admitted.

Nl: "Maar ik vecht.
En: "But I'm fighting.

Nl: En de dokters zijn aardig."
En: And the doctors are nice."

Nl: Niels knikte samen met Sanne, opgelucht dat Bram eerlijk was.
En: Niels nodded along with Sanne, relieved that Bram was being honest.

Nl: Toch lag er iets zwaars op zijn eigen hart.
En: Yet there was something heavy on his own heart.

Nl: De dilemma tussen thuisblijven of zijn avontuur elders voortzetten hield hem al maanden bezig.
En: The dilemma of staying home or continuing his adventure elsewhere had been on his mind for months.

Nl: Hij wilde er met Bram over praten, maar de woorden bleven steken.
En: He wanted to talk about it with Bram, but the words wouldn't come.

Nl: Het was Bram die de stilte doorbrak.
En: It was Bram who broke the silence.

Nl: "Niels," begon hij, "ik weet dat je plannen hebt.
En: "Niels," he began, "I know you have plans.

Nl: Overzee, toch?"
En: Overseas, right?"

Nl: Niels slikte en knikte, verrast door Bram's scherpzinnigheid.
En: Niels swallowed and nodded, surprised by Bram's perceptiveness.

Nl: "Je moet gaan," zei Bram stevig.
En: "You have to go," Bram said firmly.

Nl: De helderheid in zijn ogen was onmiskenbaar.
En: The clarity in his eyes was unmistakable.

Nl: "Ik red me hier wel.
En: "I'll manage here.

Nl: En ik wil dat je gelukkig bent.
En: And I want you to be happy.

Nl: Echt gelukkig."
En: Truly happy."

Nl: Niels voelde een golf van emoties.
En: Niels felt a wave of emotions.

Nl: "Maar ik wil je niet in de steek laten," protesteerde hij zacht.
En: "But I don't want to abandon you," he protested softly.

Nl: "Je laat me niet in de steek," antwoordde Bram.
En: "You're not abandoning me," Bram replied.

Nl: "Ik weet dat je altijd voor me klaarstaat, al ben je ver weg."
En: "I know you'll always be there for me, even if you're far away."

Nl: Dat moment, vol begrip en broederlijke liefde, was tegelijk pijnlijk en bevrijdend.
En: That moment, full of understanding and brotherly love, was both painful and liberating.

Nl: Niels voelde hoe de knoop in zijn maag langzaam oploste.
En: Niels felt the knot in his stomach slowly loosen.

Nl: Hij wilde zijn broer omarmen, hem bedanken voor zijn moed en steun.
En: He wanted to embrace his brother, to thank him for his courage and support.

Nl: Maar de woorden kwamen niet; toch voelde hij dat Bram het wist.
En: But the words wouldn't come; yet he felt that Bram knew.

Nl: Later, toen ze het gebouw verlieten, voelde Niels zich lichter.
En: Later, as they left the building, Niels felt lighter.

Nl: Hij besefte dat hij zijn dromen kon volgen zonder zijn verantwoordelijkheid te negeren.
En: He realized that he could follow his dreams without neglecting his responsibilities.

Nl: Hij zou altijd verbonden blijven met Bram, ongeacht de afstand.
En: He would always remain connected with Bram, regardless of the distance.
