Dana Sawyer is a full-time professor of religion and philosophy at the Maine College of Art and adjunct professor of Asian religions at Bangor Theological Seminary. He is the biographer of Aldous Huxley — a book Huxley's widow Laura called the only biography Aldous would have actually liked — and has studied with Huston Smith, Andrew Harvey, and numerous figures in the world's contemplative traditions. He has traveled to India twelve times and has been vice president of the Siddhartha School Project in Ladakh, a Buddhist school visited twice by the Dalai Lama.

In this interview, Dana discusses the perennial philosophy as "the tradition of no tradition or all traditions," horizontal versus vertical transcendence, why spiritual growth is an "infinite continuous flowering" rather than a destination, the Gnostic embrace of mystery over doctrine, the dangers of becoming "robotic" in spiritual interpretation, the role of psychedelics (and their limits), cultural misunderstandings of Eastern traditions in America, compassion and social engagement as spiritual practice, the true meaning of Tantra, Naga Babas, and what full spiritual maturity actually looks like — including being "convictionally impaired."

In 2003, Richard Schooping was diagnosed with AIDS and cancer, placed in hospice-level care, and told he would not survive. By 2007 he walked out of the hospital after a bout of double pneumonia — and the AIDS simply left his reality.
