This podcast advocates for the newest Modern Western Square Dance program - SSD or Social Square Dancing.  A great way to join in square dancing where classes take 25 hours to learn the complete program.

Today's episode features Staff Recording Artists calling singing calls using the SSD program.  This is excellent for home use, when you don't have a caller, or for callers to use as a learning resource.

Previously featured in this podcast series, Johnnie Wykoff, from the early sixties until his passing in 2000, was a popular caller and recording artist.  Johnnie Wykoff recorded 169 singles, mostly on Blue Star, with today's episode highlighting one of his cassette albums.

Episode 433 released last week had audio problems so it has been remastered and is presented today.  Content is not the same as last week.

A newly discovered, reel-to-reel tape recording of a live dance featuring the calling of Larry Ward.  Possibly the most popular caller in the country measured by the hundreds, if not thousands, of dancers who were members of his private club - the B Sharps.  This recording is Larry Ward in his prime.

A true pioneer in the MWSD activity, Bob Osgood, presented the history of our dance in 1979.  His presentation was captured on cassette and has been cleaned up in our studio for you.

Bob picks up the timeline post World War II, as Modern Western Square Dancing was pulling away from the folk dance groups of the time.  Rather than being part of an evening of folk dances where teaching was done every time the dance was presented, MWSD set the standard that dancers had to know the fundamental dances, which involved taking lessons for about six weeks.  In this way, every group get-together was dancing, rather than learning and re-learning the fundamentals.

There is an audio sample of Bob Osgood calling at the end of his presentation.

For dancers who don't have a caller for their SSD dances and for callers learning more about SSD, here is a live Social Square Dance called in Yuma, Arizona in 2023.

A name that exploded into popularity in the early sixties was that of JACK JACKSON.  Featured at most of the dance weekends, festivals, and camps, he was a recording artist for Sets In Order Records - one of very few.

This is a dance recording from 1962.  You can experience for yourself the square dance mastery of Jack Jackson.
