Campgrounds are generally some of the safest places you can be—filled with families, hikers, anglers, and people looking for a quiet night under the stars. There’s an unspoken understanding out there: shared space, mutual respect, and a kind of watchful neighbor mentality, even among strangers. But that same openness is what makes them unpredictable. You don’t choose who ends up in the site next to you, and in remote areas—where cell service is limited and help isn’t right around the corner—conflicts can escalate quickly. Most of the time, it’s nothing more than a noise complaint or a minor disagreement… but every once in a while, the isolation that draws people in is the very thing that allows a situation to turn violent before anyone can step in, such as the case in Buffalo National River.
