It's not uncommon for even moderely successful podcasts to to get 20-30 guest pitches per week. These pitches are often listeners who have a related story they'd like to tell.   But are these potential guests and stories a good match for your podcast? And if not, what's the best way of handling this?   How to select guests (and stories) for your podcast and how to turn down the ones that aren't a match is the topic of this episode. If you do enough interviews, somebody whom you've interviewed is going to die. Sometimes this will happen before you release the episode.   Then what? And what do you do if somebody dies after an episode has been released?   In this episode, I share my thoughts on the reality of doing lots of interviews (and sometimes even just a few) and options for how to handle situations of death, stroke, and sunstance abuse that affects your guests. How do you get people to pay attention to your podcast? This is one of the most frequently-asked questions I get.   I wrote about this in my book, Big Podcast – Grow Your Podcast Audience, Build Listener Loyalty, and Get Everybody Talking About Your Show. But this is a big topic, so I wanted to share a couple of things I've seen from two companies in the podcasting space, Riverside and Focusrite, to get you to think about launching (and relaunching) in a different way.   One of the best things you can do to launch a podcast (or just about anything) is by "borrowing" an audience. This is why we see so many celebrities, experts, and "influencers" in ads.   But that's just part of the process. If it were easy to buy your way in, everybody would do it. You have to be skillful.
