Things to keep in mind when renovating a condo
If you have a condo and want to do an update, here are some of the things to consider as there are some unique circumstances that are very different from renovating a single family home or multi-family.
Summary of the points:
1) Ask the condo board what you are allowed to make changes to
2) Major changes to plumbing or electrical may not be possible
3) Watch noise, there may be only certain times that you are allowed to do work, also take into consideration your neighbors schedule
4) You may have to reserve the elevator for things like large deliveries and garbage removal.
5) Watch your purchases overspending on renos is common- if you're the first person to sell in the building and people are comparing cost to not reno’d condos you may not be able to increase the value by much.
6) Remember lots of condos are made of concrete and it's hard to add things like potlights without dropping the ceiling
7) Find out what you can dump in the condo garbage vs what needs to be removed independently, as you may have to make special arrangements to dispose of garbage.
