Libanon dreigt in een voedselcrisis te belanden door de Israëlische aanvallen, waarschuwt VN-rapporteur Michael Fakhri. De landbouw ligt stil, handel is verstoord en veel mensen zijn ontheemd. De voedselonzekerheid, die al hoog was door de economische crisis, kan snel verslechteren als de aanvallen escaleren. Journalist en Libanon-kenner Rosalyn Saab over hoe gewone Libanezen proberen te overleven.

In de Amerikaanse presidentscampagne gaat het veel over strenger immigratiebeleid en betere grensbewaking. Maar in swing state Arizona zitten verpleeghuisdirecteuren juist te springen om hulp van nieuwe immigranten. Correspondent Karlijn van Houwelingen ging kijken op een afdeling die dringend personeel nodig heeft.

Terwijl alle ogen op Libanon zijn gericht, gaat het geweld onverminderd door in Gaza. Gisteren werd een school aangevallen waar veel families schuilden, en sinds het weekend voert Israël een offensief uit in het omsingelde vluchtelingenkamp Jabalia. Daar werden deze week twee journalisten gedood terwijl ze verslag deden. Ondanks de enorme risico’s blijven Palestijnse journalisten vertellen wat zich voor hun ogen afspeelt, in de hoop dat de wereld ze niet vergeet. Correspondent Ruth Vandewalle sprak met enkele van hen en vertelt ons over de situatie in Gaza, een jaar na het begin van de oorlog.

Costa Rica was altijd een baken van rust in Midden Amerika. Terwijl buurlanden kampten met bendegeweld en drugskartels bleef Costa Rica een paradijs van stabiliteit en voor ecotoerisme. Maar voor hoe lang nog? De criminaliteit neemt er de afgelopen jaren toe en daarmee ook de repressie door de autoriteiten. Antropoloog Julienne Weegels van de Universiteit van Amsterdam doet onderzoek naar criminaliteit en keerde vorige week terug uit het land.

Vandaag wordt er door de Ministers van Binnenlandse Zaken van alle EU-lidstaten gesproken over een voorstel om online seksueel kindermisbruik tegen te gaan. Iets waar iedereen voor is, zou je denken. Toch hebben enkele honderden experts zich in een open brief tegen het huidige voorstel uitgesproken dat volgens hen veel te vergaand is. Onder hen is specialist digitale veiligheid Jaap-Henk Hoekman, die zijn bezwaren toelicht.

De Franse journalist Zineb El Rhazoui, ooit bekend om haar scherpe kritiek op de islam in het satirische blad Charlie Hebdo, ligt nu onder vuur vanwege haar uitspraken over het Israëlische optreden in Gaza. Hoe kijkt zij vandaag de dag naar de vrijheid van meningsuiting in Frankrijk en Europa?

Stampende techno en feesten die nooit eindigen: de Berlijnse nachtclubcultuur is roemrucht. Het is in de Duitse hoofdstad de week van de clubcultuur, maar er valt weinig te vieren. Correspondent Jenne-Jan Holtland ziet de angst en wanhoop groeien in de ogen van de inwoners van Beiroet. Sinds de massale luchtbombardementen en invasie door Israël wordt de Libanese hoofdstad overspoeld met vluchtelingen. De Libanezen vrezen dat Israël net als in de Gazastrook alles gaat platbombarderen.
(11:40) Zelensky onthult zijn overwinningsplan aan bondgenoten
Eerder deelde de Oekraïense president zijn langverwachte overwinningsplan met zijn belangrijkste bondgenoot, de Verenigde Staten. Deze week zal hij tijdens de bijeenkomst in het Duitse Ramstein zijn strategie verder toelichten aan de overige bondgenoten. Kyiv hoopt dat dit leidt tot extra wapenleveringen vanuit de donorlanden. Intussen verliezen de Oekraïners in hoog tempo controle in de Donbas. Oekraïne-verslaggever Michiel Driebergen volgt het diplomatieke offensief van Zelensky. Luitenant-kolonel Tom Simoens van de Koninklijke Militaire School in Brussel bespreekt met ons het laatste nieuws van het front.

Sinds 7 oktober vorig jaar is er een geweldsuitbarsting op gang gekomen die zelfs voor het Midden-Oosten uitzonderlijk is. De Gaza-oorlog heeft alleen onder de bevolking daar al ruim 40.000 slachtoffers gemaakt. Door die duizelingwekkende hoeveelheid verloren mensenlevens dreigt de directe aanleiding voor al het geweld naar de achtergrond te verdwijnen: de aanval vanuit de Gaza-strook waarbij 1200 Israëlische burgers en militairen werden vermoord en ruim tweehonderd anderen gegijzeld werden. Vandaag staat het land dus volledig in het teken van de herdenking van die aanslag. En ook wij besteden onze hele uitzending eraan. Vanuit Tel Aviv duidt correspondent Gilad Perez de sfeer in Israël zelf. Collega Edwin Koopman sprak daarnaast met families en vrienden van Israëlische gegijzelden. Koopman sprak met Amit Levy wiens zusje nog steeds vast zit, Yifat Zailer, nichtje van een hele gegijzelde familie en Jozef Engel, wiens kleinzoon wél vrijkwam.

Niet alleen in Gaza, ook in Libanon woedt nu oorlog. En dat heeft in verkiezingstijd effect op de Amerikaanse politiek. Met name in swing states is er veel woede onder de Arabisch Amerikaanse gemeenschap. En dat is nou net een kiezersgroep die vier jaar geleden cruciaal was voor de zege van Joe Biden. En nu weer heel bepalend kan zijn bij de presidentsverkiezingen. Correspondent Karlijn van Houwelingen legt uit.
(08:05) De Afghaanse bewakers: Heeft Nederland niks geleerd van Srebrenica?
Onze regering wil Afghaanse bewakers en hun familie niet naar Nederland halen, ondanks eerdere toezeggingen. Veel van hen leven ondergedoken uit angst voor de Taliban. Alma Mustafíc is een Srebrenica-overlevende. Haar vader, die als elektricien voor Dutchbat werkte, werd door Nederland niet gered of in bescherming genomen. Hij overleefde de genocide niet. Alma Mustafíc won hierover een rechtszaak tegen de Nederlandse staat en doceert inmiddels mensenrechten aan de Hogeschool Utrecht. Zij trekt vergelijkingen over toen en nu.
(19:30) Uitgelicht: hoe wij ons op het gebied van mensenrechten in de eigen voet schieten
Mensenrechtenorganisaties uitten deze week scherpe kritiek toen Just Stop Oil-activisten 2 jaar celstraf kregen voor het gooien van tomatensoep op de lijst van Van Goghs Zonnebloemen in Londen. Zij zien de omgang met (klimaat)activisten enorm verharden in Westerse landen. Terwijl diezelfde landen elders in de wereld juist wél hameren op de rechten van activisten om te demonstreren. Bureau Buitenland-collega Djuna Kramer vertelt.

Na de aanslag op Nasrallah liet premier Netanyahu al weten dat dit volgens hem hét moment is voor een nieuwe orde in het Midden-Oosten. De huidige escalaties zouden tot nieuwe machtsverhoudingen kunnen leiden. Maar hoe Israël dat dan precies voor zich ziet, is nog niet helemaal duidelijk, net als de prijs die ervoor betaald moet worden. Daarover straks met Joost Hiltermann, hoofd Midden-Oosten bij de International Crisis Group, en Israël-correspondent Gilad Perez.
