Running a business means you’re constantly making decisions.

Some are small and straightforward. Others feel heavy — the kind that keep you awake at night.

• Maybe it’s raising your prices.
• Letting a difficult client go.
• Hiring help or getting support
• Changing direction in your business.
• Or stepping into a bigger version of the practice you want to build.

And the truth is, the ability to make decisions confidently is one of the biggest differences between businesses that stay stuck and those that grow.

Why Decision-Making Is Important In Business

As an equine or canine practitioner you are highly trained clinically, but no one teaches you how to make business decisions.

So what often happens is:

• we delay decisions

• we overthink them

• we ask everyone else what they think

• or we wait until the situation forces the decision for us
  

Indecision is still a decision.

Why Decision Making Can Feel Hard

Most difficult business decisions aren’t actually about strategy. They’re about identity and fear.

Questions like:

• What will people think?

• What if I get it wrong?

• What if clients leave?

• What if it doesn’t work?

These are completely normal thoughts.

But if you allow them to drive your decision-making, you end up protecting your current situation instead of building the business you want.

How to Make Decisions

Here’s three ways to approach a difficult decision

Imagine the version of you whose business is already working the way you want.

• They have their dream clients

• Their diary is full with the work they enjoy

• Their business is sustainable

What decision would that version of you make?

2. Is This Decision Moving Me Forward or Keeping Me Safe?

Some decisions keep you safe/ stuck, and others move you forward. For example- keeping prices low might feel safe, but it’s not moving your business forward.

3. What’s the Cost of Not Deciding?

We often focus on the risk of making a decision.

But we rarely think about the cost of staying where we are.

For example:

• continuing with draining clients

• undercharging for your services

• avoiding marketing or visibility

• not developing your expertise further

Over time, these decisions quietly limit the growth of your business.

Sometimes the bigger risk is not acting at all.

You need to be able to make decisions and trust yourself in business, and that starts with an identity shift. 

Progress and Decision Making are linked! Remember you don’t need to make perfect decisions, just ones that are aligned with where you want your business to go.

Many equine and canine practitioners struggle to grow their businesses not because they lack skill, but because they haven’t positioned themselves as the expert in their field.

Expert positioning isn’t about ego or claiming to know everything. It’s about making it clear who you help, how you help them, and why people should trust you.

Here are three simple steps to start positioning yourself as an expert.

1. Decide and Claim

You can’t be known for everything.

The first step is deciding what you want to be known for and clearly claiming that space.

This might be:

• Equine rehabilitation

• Performance dog conditioning

• Behavioural issues in working dogs

• Post-injury return-to-sport programmes

• Senior dog mobility
  

When you try to appeal to everyone, people struggle to understand what you actually do. But when you clearly claim an area of expertise, referrals become easier, people remember you,  and trust grows faster

Ask yourself:

• What problems do I solve best?

• What cases do I enjoy most?

• What do people already come to me for?
  

Then start communicating that focus consistently.

2. Beliefs

You will need to strengthen some beliefs, release limiting ones, and take on new beliefs around your expert status- this will make step 3 much easier. 

Your beliefs shape your action taking, marketing and how you run your practice:

For example, you might believe:

• You have the skills for today

• My work changes lives

• I have enough knowledge to get started
  

3. Showcase Your Expert Status

Many brilliant practitioners stay invisible because they don’t share what they know.

Showcasing your expertise can be simple:

• Share case studies

• Guest teaching 

• Podcast guesting

• Writing articles 

• Social media takeovers

• Joint lives

• Messaging and positioning of your content 

It’s important to show how you think and how you help.

Over time, this builds:

• credibility

• trust

• authority
  

When people repeatedly see your insights, they begin to view you as the go-to professional in your area.

Remember

You don’t become known as an expert by waiting.

You become known by deciding your space, sharing what you believe, and consistently showing your expertise.

When you do this well, your reputation starts working for you — and your business grows as a result.

When it comes to attracting new clients, and welcoming sales there’s four key areas that over 90% of equine and canine practitioners miss, and in this week’s podcast episode I’m going to unpack these.

1.Swapping working with ‘anyone’ for truly aligned clients 

Working with clients that you really love, those who appreciate the work you do, and match your energy and personality is the most fulfilling and rewarding thing you can do. Working with ‘anyone’ because I need clients is a fast ticket to burnout.

Remember it’s your business, you get to call the shots, so decide who you’d like to work with - both the animals and the people. 

2.Absolute clarity on the results you offer and the ripple impacts. 

Most practitioners and bodyworkers are selling a session, or package, in short they are selling a time-block of their skills- but that’s not what people want to buy. 

We buy to solve problems, and the ripple effects of you helping my animal are huge. Get clear on what these are, and start using this in your marketing.

3. Trusting yourself and staying in ‘your lane’ avoiding shiny object syndrome

There’s a lot of noise online, and it’s easy to get into the trap of feeling that you need to be like other people. Another therapist is offering x, so maybe you do too ? That voice can take hold, and before you know it you’re jumping from one idea to another. Instead trust yourself and go all in on your selected services, and commit to marketing these to the fullest. 

4.Taking aligned action and getting right out of your comfort zone

It’s easy to think you are taking action to welcome your next clients, but most equine or canine practitioners are simply repeating what they’ve done before (despite it not giving them the results they want), or are dabbling. Posting inconsistently on social media, and a few local facebook groups, hoping that clients will find them. 

What about listening to those nudges, reaching out to the vet you’ve always wanted to work with and doing the things that slightly scare you?
