  • Dr Mel Lee On How To Revive Your Drive - Part 1

On the first episode of season two of The Business Mastermind Podcast, Gavin is joined by Melanie Lee to discuss how business owners and leadership team members who are jaded and lacking morale thanks to the effects and pressures of the pandemic. They discuss the psychology of self and the psychology of others to get the both out of you and your teams.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There's a lot of emphasis on mindset and getting the best out of yourself, goal setting and psychological concepts that I can relate to and understand, but what used to frustrate me sometimes in some of these discussions was the missing piece about where really good, skilled psychological thinking can come in. We model how the brain actually works alongside what we know about relationships, linking and integrating the mind and the body. That's our passion.
    • We are fundamentally social beings, the evolution of getting to the thinking brain is a higher evolved process, so when we're in situations of threat that's going to activate parts of our brain that drive us to primal behaviours. Who hasn't been in this state in the past 18 months? We can utilise neuroscience knowledge of how our brain works to explain our behaviours and give us choices rather than jumping straight to strategy – missing the process.
    • There are three steps to assessing people who have been through traumatic events 1) Regulate, 2) Relate 3) Reason. These are based on the way the brain is structured. Most people intuitively just straight to reason to problem solve.
    • The right and the left brain are disconnected during traumatic experiences which is why we don't have words for certain experiences, but we can be triggered into remembering exactly how it feels. That's how we feel we're going crazy because we sense something, but we know logically in the moment there's nothing to be scared of.
    • Business owners might be sensitive to moments of potential failure, or criticism, or not meeting an expectation that you'd set yourself and feeling you're coming below par. These feelings don't come out of nowhere, they have an historical route and it can be fascinating to get some coaching to work out what your relationship patterns are. Then you have choices, you can see it coming and choose your response.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Process means the how and the why of what we do rather than the what we say.'

‘Most of the finish is in the preparation.'

    ‘What is maintaining this problem?'

‘We think we know ourselves, but a lot of the time we're acting out of automatic response. If business owners can be responsive and not reactive it makes such a difference.'

‘Our body is wise, it remembers things.'

  • The Business Mastermind Podcast – Season Two Introduction

On this episode Gavin lays out his plans for season two of The Business Mastermind Podcast, coming soon!

In season two the episodes will be getting more in depth, like masterclasses, on the building blocks for real deep success. The work you need to do on character, strategy, people, scaling in your business in order to create and sustain tangible success and growth. Gavin will also be providing his own narrative, ideas and thoughts sparked by the conversations on the podcasts, separate from the conversation itself. These will certainly be packed with dense amounts of information that will become more valuable upon repeated listens.

The theme of season two is ‘Revive'. This is more pertinent now since the pandemic began and the idea is to revive where you were in your business, bringing back and engaging your teams, reviving the commitment and the vision and passion for the outcomes you want to achieve, to reconnect with the values of the business, but also to be able to help people recover and revive in terms of their mojo, happiness and health.

  • The Benefits of Cloud Accounting – with Gavin Preston

On this episode, Gavin brings to a close what is now Season 1 of The Business Mastermind podcast after more than two years with a solo episode. In this episode, Gavin draws on his background in accountancy and looks at finance and accounting systems in business, specifically how a lot of businesses are doing far too much manual input rather than using the power of cloud accounting which enables quicker, better data, better interpretation and saves man hours.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I've found that there's a huge amount of manual inputting around financing; manual inputting of purchase invoices, sales invoices, re-keying and typing stuff in. It surprised my but made me think that you don't know what you don't know.
    • So many business owners manage their business by the amount of cash in the bank, slightly more sophisticated business owners manage their business by profit and loss as well with an accountant, other will manage profit on a monthly or quarterly basis, which is still a couple of months after the month end and the data is then out of date. Even more sophisticated owners have management accounts within two weeks of the month's end and they increase the value of the balance sheet because they're building a business with an exit in mind.
    • Apps like Xero and Quickbooks are much more intuitive to use, save you time and grant you access to an ecosystem of apps and software that provide massive bang for your buck.
    • They also give you visual data on the dashboard so you can see the state of your finances through graphs, charts, etc.
    • There are apps that also ways to manage cashflow and cashflow forecasting including Float and Fluidly which has AI that learns your transactions and help to forecast cashflow which helps you to scenario plan.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I've used these tools with different clients and have massively saved them cost and time within their business.'

‘Xero and Quickbooks are fantastic for businesses turning over sub-£5million.'

‘The key thing with tools like these is you're saving a stack of time.'

‘Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity.'

‘There's an opportunity out there, have a look at it and see how where you can save money, see where you can get better data, see how you can make better decisions so you can put more money on the bottom line.'

  • All Things Marketing – with Jason Wright

On this episode Gavin is joined by Jason Wright of Intentionally Inspiration to talk about marketing funnels. Specifically, five strategies around developing your content, how you can use something as simple as your email footer to encourage people to engage with you, email campaigns – what works and what doesn't – building and nurturing relationships with prospective and existing customers, and much more.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A sales funnel is really about building a relationship with a new contact, introducing them to your world and giving them a little bit of value in exchange for an email address and then keeping that relationship going to the point they become a customer and repeat customer.
    • A lot of people already have a big email list but don't know what to do with it. Don't just sell through it. Build the back end first then the front end, then the traffic. If you don't have a plan after getting people to your website, you're missing a ton of opportunities, wasting a lot of time and missing money.
    • The five buckets: If you had to pick five areas of your business that are different but overlap, like a Venn Diagram, what would they be? For example; motivation, entrepreneurship, digital marketing, sales funnels, etc. This gives you different buckets to pull ideas and content from and it prevents your list from being exhausted from hearing about the same things every week. This can be used for social media and podcasting content throughout the month as well.
    • I use a passive journey customer footer at the bottom of my email that points people towards my social media, resources and content, podcast, how to work with the company and myself. It shows people how to move down the funnel without drawing attention to it.
    • Any time you can go live, on Facebook Live for example, and interact with your audience is really powerful. Try to open up actual dialogues in conversation. You can pick the brains of your best clients to see what they'd like you to offer.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If I'm receiving emails from you daily, I'm probably going to unsubscribe!'

‘Most people think about their sales funnel completely backwards.'

‘Most sales don't happen in the first five touch points, everybody's different.'

‘Pre-sell new offers without building anything, ask what or if people would pay for something you're thinking about selling.'

‘Don't be scared to show your personality and entertain. If you're confident, show how you've failed.'

  • The Future of Work and the Importance of Culture - with Rael Brick

On this episode Gavin is joined by entrepreneur and venture capitlaist Real Bricker, who now delivers workshops on building businesses and thinking outside the norm with experiences ranging from working 6000 feet underground to building an educational business with six campuses and 4000 students.

The pair talk about the future of work and the importance of culture.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I've always wanted to know how my role, such as working as an engineer 6000 feet down a mine shift, impacted on the gold we were getting out of the ground and on the greater organisation. So, I left the mines to do an MBa… not that makes you a specialist or even an entrepreneur. I did get to understand HR though.
    • I love motivational speaking because I get to see the lights turn on in people's eyes, I want to see them get it and say: “I can be successful in business”.
    • The key to growing my businesses has been giving up control to gain control. As soon as we started outsourcing certain tasks, it freed us up to grow the business. Putting trust in the right people and empowering them really makes a difference.
    • I never ask staff to do something I wouldn't do. I've had staff that have messed up or staff that have taken advantage, but by opening up yourself as the boss (the good, the bad and the ugly) and being real with people it keeps your finger on the pulse of what's going on with your staff and your business.
    • Don't overcomplicate your systems. If you can't explain the way your business works on one A4 piece of paper, it's too complicated. Also, communication is king and certainly don't lie or bend the truth, the truth will always out.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Business is simple, sometimes you just have to dive in and adjust your course.'

‘Give up control to gain control.'

‘I was in the right place at the right time to start up the educational business, but not by design.'

‘It's an amazing feeling to be able to give back and make an impact and positive change.'

‘When did you last ask your staff about a better way to implement processes, or how their families are?'

  • Listening and Helping in the New Norm - with Michael Haynes

On this episode Gavin is joined by Michael Haynes is an SME business growth specialist who works with CEOs of service-based businesses with between 10 and 150 employees to achieve growth through innovation and sales. He is the author of ‘Listen, Innovate, Grow: A Guidebook for Startups and Small Businesses Looking to Acquire and Grow Business Customers'

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Over the past year I've found our CEOs have been inundated with content left, right and centre, what they want is sense-making and road-mapping
    • A lot of SME CEOs are moving away from LinkedIn because they're getting a lot of sales pitches being disguised in various ways and content apparently from thought leaders and experts, but it's confusing them and it's not giving them a clear view on how to move forward.
    • The bar has been raised for business buyers in the new norm, even before Covid the dynamics and behaviours of buyers and decision makers has changed fundamentally. They do a lot of their own research in terms of formulating potential solutions, identifying product and service providers before they talk to anyone. What they're looking for in these uncertain times is someone to help them make sense of all the information so they can identify ways to grow and expand.
    • There are a number of ways to innovate in business including in technology, products and services, process innovations, organisational innovations, marketing innovations
    • Advocay marketing is about leveraging your existing colleagues and clients and using them to drive growth. It's really effective in B2B, one of the key things is setting up a referral programme because one of the things buyers will do is talk to their colleagues to see who they know that can do a certain job.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I'm really big on listening, you've really got to get an understanding of the market of your buyers'

‘It's about innovating and introducing multiple approaches based on understanding the goals you have and the needs of your markets and your customers'

‘Make sure the kinds of content you're delivering is really adding value, is educational and answering the key questions your customers are looking for'

‘Are there certain events, publications, blogs etc that your potential clients operate in? Be active in these. But also make direct contact where you can'

‘Business innovation is new introductions and or improvements you are making in your business are based on market, customer, and buyer needs'

  • The Six Pillars of Leadership – with Major General Robert W. Mixon Jr

On this episode Gavin is joined by Major General Robert W. Mixon Jr. a leadership expert who has honed that skill in his previous career in the U.S. Army.

He shares his six pillars of leadership insight as well as advice for taking charge and stay calm in situations where people are looking for clarity and certainty and how a daily self-audit can help with that.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The six principles of leadership are: 1. Set the azimuth – who are we, what do we do, why do we do it? 2. What is our intent? 3. Values. 4. What's our culture? 5. When in charge take charge. 6. Balance personal and professional.
    • Do the right thing when none's looking, the senior leaders of Volkswagen were personally accountable for paying the company back over $350million because of their wrongdoing which damaged the company.
    • Balance is not about hours or work/life. It's about your four energy levels; physical, spiritual emotional and mental.
    • The opportunity and the changes in the world brought about by the pandemic should jolt us in terms of who we are and what we represent and whether we're walking the talk.
    • One-to-one meetings are the most important meetings to your company, they must be planned for as such. Schedule, prepare for it, conduct it in a space that's effective to have it, ask thoughtful questions, listen to responses and take notes.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘My Mom told me a thousand times; God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason, are you listening with the intent to understand, or are you listening with the intent to reply?'

‘Listening leaders are, by far, more effective leaders.'

‘There's no reason for panic in the Big Six Model, you've built a team of people, you have an azimuth and a purpose, you can be the calm in the chaos and so can they.'

‘You can't manage time, time is finite. That leads you in the wrong direction in understanding what balance is.'

‘It takes a while, you're not going to move the needle in your own leadership model, or in those of others, or the culture and the ecosystem of your organisation without investment of your time and energy. You've got to expect a year or two for this to take shape.'

‘The most successful leaders I've seen in the last 18 months are those who focus on alignment and a common understanding of who we are, where are we going and what are we going to do to get there?'

  • Magic and Marketing – with Daniel Chan

On this episode Gavin is joined by Dan Chan, a master magician, mentor and marketer. Dan has worked in Silicon Valley, featured in the Wall Street Journal and The Hustle and has been featured on Business Insider and CNBC in 2020.

Dan is mainly here to talk about the business of magic and marketing, but also how his work has been affected by the COVID pandemic and how he's gone from face-to-face interaction to virtual.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Dan was working at PayPal while starting out in magic. Then, when he realised he was making more money with magic, $200 per hour, he left PayPal to perform magic full-time.
    • Dan was an Air BnB host earning $15,000 doing experiences with bayareadinnershow.com, when they were forced to go virtual during the pandemic he was asked to become a virtual host. They gave his 200 shares of stock at $68 IPO price and these popped to over $150 once the show was launched.
    • Some tricks don't play well on Zoom, but others really do, but the intimacy has increased because Dan's doing it to hundreds of people at once. My show is stronger on Zoom because there's more consistency. Clients love the fact they're getting more value.
    • Saying that I worked with Elon Musk and having Pre-IPO Paypal opened doors for me on LinkedIn, it was misdirection. I created engaging, valuable posts on Facebook groups as well, which has been another great strategy I've used. The more you do this to bring people to you, the better you get at it.
    • I was often hiding behind the trick and I felt the stories needed to be told better on Zoom so I made autobiographical storytelling a part of it, no one can steal your story like they can steal a trick and the audience will get to know and like you, then they'll buy from you.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You need to think globally, don't just grab the low-hanging fruit'

‘I started doing magic for free to see if it was worth it, then I pitched reporters for scale'

‘Now, I can do shows for clients in the US and India at the same time for a better price'

‘I lost $8,000 in one week'

‘He who tells the best story in life wins'

‘Branding yourself effectively with rhymes and alliteration is hypnotic to people'

  • Shaun Holt on Wealth Management on How We Can Leave The Next Generation In A Better Place

On this episode Gavin is joined by financial advisor, Shaun Holt to share advice on legacy, growing wealth and what you can do as your business recovers after the pandemic.

Shaun is passionate about wealth management and sees it as the most important thing for families to prosper over time, increasing generational wealth. This means planning for the future by getting good financial advice around your business and personal wealth and setting up a solid financial plan in place so that you can enjoy the fruits of your work as well as leaving substantial wealth aside for your family.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Children need to be taught about financial planning; money is important but it's more important to teach people how to treat it properly. Good wealth management will allow you to manage your life so that you can enjoy your hobbies, family time and health as well as allowing you to pass it down to provide for your children.
    • You'll see traits in families if you look at what each generation before did as a job. If a grandparent was in hard working job, the parent will likely be hard working and so will the children.
    • Money should enhance peoples lives, going on a spending spree buying Range Rovers and holidays and blowing your cash might be a great experience. But, down the line they'll be worse off emotionally because the money will run out.
    • We can pass down knowledge and wisdom, both the successes and the failures because you learn more from failure. For example, learning about tax – especially around death. Finance is the easy bit, time is the hard bit, so put a good financial plan in place.
    • When selling a business, make sure you point out the potential growth strategy to the prospective next owner, so they're more interested in buying it before it's peaked. You wouldn't want to but something that's run its course, you want to make money out of your investment.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Tax is a contribution, you may not be able to decide how its spent, but it contributes to society.'

‘Leave the world in a better place than you found it for those that follow you.'

‘Hand down money in a better way than just giving money.'

‘There are inspirational young people, but the last thing they need is their desire taken away from them by being given money so they don't need anything.'

‘How do you want to be remembered?'

‘If your business can run without you, it's a lot more saleable than if you're still involved in the day-to-day.'

  • Mike Moll from Market Me on getting cut-through with your Digital Marketing and why Inception Marketing is so effective

On this episode Gavin is joined by Mike Moll form Market Me Consulting, who shares his tips on inception marketing and how that gets you cut-through and connects with businesses in the crowded space of digital marketing.

Mike loves helping small businesses to take control of their futures by helping the reach the perfect customer base through digital marketing. He gives great insight into how to pinpoint the best decision makers and how to approach them in the first place to introduce yourself and set up a relationship without the hard sell, which is more attractive than being pushy.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Inception marketing is where businesses get the emails of the people they want to attract, load them into Facebook or LinkedIn which then shows you whether you know them so you can tailor your ad to those people so you have a better chance of getting engagement.
    • LinkedIn Sales Navigator allows you to drill down into companies to find the decision maker you're looking to reach. Connect with those people and, once they've accepted, send them videos via LinkedIn Messenger as a warm introduction.
    • You need to use a combination of digital advertising as well as building real relationships with people who make the decisions.
    • People will take time to tell you why the meeting isn't right for them right now if you send a video to them, which isn't a ‘yes', but it is an engagement. Then try again in a few months or ask for a referral.
    • Showing that you understand a company's pain point is an effective tool when pitching to a prospective customer.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I learned digital marketing and Google Ads over a weekend by watching YouTube.'

‘Why would someone buy into me? If I can explain how this will make them money and how much, that's a really compelling reason for them to trust me and want to work with me.'

‘What are you selling? Are they easy to go to digital marketing?'

‘You need to create a platform where people look for you.'

‘People don't like being told what to do, when you tell me I need to do this for my business I think ‘get out of here!' Invite them in to a further conversation if they think what I'm offering is valuable.'

‘I haven't come across an account that we haven't been able to produce a profitable Google Ad for.'
