Welcome to class! This week’s featured Educated Educator is Sam Long. Sam is a high school biology teacher, a writer for Rethinking Schools, and a proud trans-man. As a biology teacher, he knows the arguments often phrased about “basic biology” dictating that there are two and only two sexes in the human species. And he knows those arguments simply do not find support in evidence. Biology is so much more diverse and so much more interesting than a simple binary. Want to learn more about teaching biologic diversity, including trans-inclusive and affirming content? Check out these resources!

Welcome to Homeroom, class! Once upon a not so distant time ago, we celebrated “Columbus Day” on the second Monday of each October. Today, many Americans commemorate that day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Why the change? Well, we started rethinking what we thought we knew and what we wanted to celebrate about our country’s history. Howard Zinn was a major force propelling us to do so with his 1980 book, A People’s History of the United States: 1492 – Present. And Howard Zinn changed much more than that for all of us who study history in this country. Today, Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny share how Howard Zinn’s philosophy guides them.

TGIBPF- Thank goodness it is once more BustED Pencils Friday! That means it’s time for First Downs and Friday Night Lights (or Busting Balls as Tim prefers…). Join us this week for a conversation with Mel Dow, Associate Director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, WIAA. Like our pal Coach Kaska, Mel lives and breathes high school athletics. He knows how much these “extra”-curricular activities enrich the school experience for the students who participate and the entire community who benefit from the events. But what about when students seek or are solicited for a little extra enrichment in the form of advertisement with their name, image, or likeness?

Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige is one hell of an educated educator, and we just never have enough time with her. This week, we take a few extra minutes to talk with Nancy about one of our favorite topics: vouchers. What are they? What intentions led to their institution and promotion? Who do they serve and who do they abandon? Class is in session- grab your pencils, we’ve got some busting to do!

Post-secondary education’s worst (and perhaps worst-kept) secret is that the vast majority of those who teach in our nation’s colleges and universities never learned how to do so. Sure, these professionals are experts in their fields. They know their specialties and the niche corners of their subject matter. And because of their subject mastery, places of higher learning expect that these experts can teach what they know to a diverse audience. The reality? Not always true. So, in a world where our expected educators are educated but not specifically for the purposes of teaching, we need- well- education! In comes ACUE, the Association for College and University Educators, our country’s finest higher-education educating coalition.
Jonathan Gyurko, recurring Pencil Buster and champion of public education, founded ACUE 10 years ago. The simple goal: improve post-secondary education. ACUE has already trained 33,000 college and university professionals to be effective educators. They can now boast two more educated educators joining the ranks as Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny commit to completing ACUE courses to improve their own teaching!
