Teacher Joanna joins Dr. Tim to pick up the conversation about the back-to-school season. Turns out, back to school involves more than tacking up new posters and cleaning desks. In those first days back in the classroom before students join them, teachers lay the groundwork for the entire year. Joanna shares her tips for building strong community with her students and establishing her classroom as a democratic learning space.

Guests: Teacher Joanna, Tim SlekarIt’s Rethinking Pencils Tuesday! As part of our partnership with Rethinking Schools, writer, editor, and educated educator Ty Marshall earns his Pencil Busting badge today. Ty joins us to promote his upcoming book with Rethinking Schools, Transgender Justice in Schools and the summer magazine edition. As Ty and the other editors at Rethinking Schools advocate, transgender justice in schools is a life-or-death thing. Beyond the need for transgender students and teachers to be physically safe, Ty emphasizes the need for joy- full unapologetic prideful joy in being- in LGBTQIA+ education.

Are you ready to go back to school? More importantly, are you ready to get back to education and learning? Dr. Johnny and Producer Jess talk about all it takes to get back into a learning space where each learner feels valued, respected, and ready to participate. Dr. Johnny walks us through the most important steps in preparing to lead a class: checking in on yourself as the teacher. He shares some of the rituals and texts that help him start school sessions on a strong foot. Centrally, he focuses on reviewing the Rights of the Child and those good core democratic values we highlight every day on Busted Pencils.

Guests: Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, Hallie Schmeling, Joanna Rizzoto, Johnny Lupinacci, Tim SlekarGoodness this week passed in a blink, and yet we covered SO MUCH! Thank goodness it’s Busted Pencils Friday, when we get to break it down. This week, we soaked in the radical joy that returned to politics with the Harris-Walz ticket. We talked professional ethics- this week’s anchoring lesson from On Tyranny– from classroom to boardroom to situation room. And today we get Tim’s Trivia, delivered in a riddle… sort of… Plus, a new lesson from from the 20th Century to focus our thoughts next week.

Guests: Johnny Lupinacci, Producer Jess, Tim SlekarToday, we’re talking human needs and human excellence. First off, checking in on the Olympics- an important opportunity for multi-cultural exchanges. And an excellent chance to promote diversity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. AND the Olympics provide ample teaching moments for two educated social studies educators.
Then, a social studies lesson in honor of the newest Vice Presidential nominee, Coach Tim Walz. Frequent caller LA Tom has brought up FDR’s “second Bill of Rights” several times this week. Just what is the second bill of rights? Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny do what they do best: educate.
*Tim’s Pittsburgh roots turn “human” into “uuuman”

Guests: Johnny Lupinacci, Tim SlekarEducators Amplified in the house! Today, we’re talking about how cool it is to have a public school teacher, especially a veteran- of the classroom and the military- running for Vice President. Walz has earned these four public school teachers’ support with his policies as Minnesota Governor that protect and support children. And we continue to talk about the joy returning to civic engagement. That beautiful joy is powerful enough to cut through the wall of August Anxiety- it’s like the Sunday Scaries but teachers in August, thank you Joanna for the brilliant term!

Joy- pure radiant jubilant joy- returns to American politics with the announcement of Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’ VP pick. Who could have guessed three weeks ago that we would be so excited for the 2024 Presidential election? Who would have guessed that public education would rise to such prominence in this race? Well, Dr. Johnny Lupinacci called that second one back in January. On the matter of joy, we’re all very pleasantly surprised. Now we get to work advocating for education, for professional ethics, and yes, for joy.

Guests: Johnny Lupinacci, Tim SlekarWhat would Matt Damon’s mom think of calling Trump and JD Vance “weird”? Well, we asked her! On the one hand, weird is a loaded word, especially for those in the LGBTQ+ community and all those who’ve been saddled with the term in childhood or beyond. On the other hand, countering a bully requires flexibility to adapt and match their style. Plus, using the word offers an opportunity to reclaim and redirect it. Like most everything, there’s nuance here, and we embrace healthy discussion and debate around it!
