In today’s episode I will talk about how to travel abroad while pumping. As most of my family lives in Germany and my job required me to take international trips, it was always a given that we would be traveling abroad during my time as a pumping mom.

I am describing my trip where I traveled alone, on a red eye from Atlanta to Frankfurt, with a layover in Amsterdam with my 10-month old daughter.

I am going to use this example to describe how best to travel abroad while pumping as it will set you up for the marathon when you hopefully only have to run the half, meaning, hopefully you either aren’t traveling with the baby or at least have someone traveling with you. Or, most likely, it is just you and your pump.

Today my friend and former co-worker Dana talks about how she pumped for her daughter Ella for 7 ½ months while traveling for work. She is giving tips on how to best get breastmilk through TSA and how she used her favorite pump, the Medela Freestyle, to pump in her seat on an airplane or in the back of her car.

Dana started pumping immediately in the hospital to get her supply up. She also had to supplement with formula from the get-go. She described herself as not a “high producer” which made me giggle but I always loved her attitude; she was not going to let that drive herself crazy and just do the best she could. Which is all we can do, right mamas?

Schedule

Dana created a low stress/flexible schedule for herself to fit with the needs of her daily routine. When She was not traveling, she pumped every 2 to 3 hours but when she traveled it was more like every 4 hours.

Melissa is a labor and delivery nurse who pumped for her son for 16 months and she is about to go into round two with her daughter, who was delivered a week after this episode was recorded. Congratulations!

Melissa talks about the welcoming and supportive environment that comes with her job but also about the challenges. For example, how a shift can either be “feast or famine” meaning, they never know how busy they will be and when she will get a break to pump.  

Her Schedule

Melissa’s schedule required her to work from 7 pm until 7 am. She would pump right before she left the house and then the first possible break she got even if it was not within her pumping schedule. I liked this suggestion as it can be applied to anyone’s busy schedule. Her second pump would be during her “lunch break” somewhere between midnight and 2 am and then one last time before she left between 5 am and 7 am.

Brittany is a first-grade teacher who has pumped for her 2 sons and is about to go into round three with her daughter. So to say she is an experienced “busy pumping mom/teacher” is an understatement.

WHO AM I?

My name is Lene and I pumped for my daughter for about a year. I had to navigate my way through pumping while working, traveling, and simply living life.

Why did I create this Podcast?

I also know, that when it came to finding resources on the “How?” it felt more like a twisted Agatha Kristi murder mystery, rather than a straightforward response. 

Don’t get me wrong, there are some great resources out there, but I wanted to hear from everyday Moms. I wanted to learn their tips and tricks that got them through their pumping days.

What is this Podcast about?

I went out to find Moms in vast varieties of “Busy” because there are as many ways of doing this as there are Busy Moms Pumping. I tried to find women in different professions so that they could describe how they handled the challenges their workday brought with it.

Judgement free Zone

This podcast is not here to say that breastfeeding is the best and only way to feed your child. As a mom your only job is to feed your baby, if that is breastmilk, formula or you skip straight to that hot coco with marshmallows, that is your choice.

Through my talks with different moms, I have learned that the choice to breastfeed is not that simple, there are so many different factors that play into this journey and often the biggest challenge is the return to work. I therefore want to acknowledge that we will not have all the answers, but I hope that we at least have some.

This interview took a direction I did not expect when I prepared my questions as my guest Lindsay answered the question of “who did you do it for?” with “ME!” This perspective is one that we had not really looked at yet and so I loved our conversation about doing this for yourself and treating it as a challenge.
