  • The Executive Assistant, donating milk and how to get your pump with insurance

Jackie is the Executive Assistant to the President of a big and busy Automotive Company. As you can imagine she is in a male dominant territory and pursuing a very public pumping journey comes with a lot of guts.

Let’s be honest, this journey needs some guts, so if you need some inspiration, I highly suggest this episode. Jackie talks about how she pumped at her desk, in her glass office that she shared with her boss and another male colleague.

Jackie also gives advise on pumps and how to get them through insurance – especially the expensive hands free pumps like the Elvie. Jackie was able to donate pumped milk and we talk a little bit about how to donate or receive breastmilk.

Jackie shared a very raw and honest response to my favorite question “What are you not doing?” and I believe every parent who had to take care for their children while working from home during this pandemic can relate.

Bottom line, you will not regret listening to this episode.

  • The Expat
Patricia is my friend from High School who just had her third baby and therefore started her 3rd breastfeeding journey. Every journey, from her first to her last, looked different and I liked her story as it showed how different each baby is and how many different factors play into the journey of breastfeeding.

We also went off on a bit of a tangent as Patricia is Venezuelan, who grew up in Miami and spent her recent years in Denmark and Norway. We talked a bit about the cultural differences and what it is like to raise children in Scandinavia – lots of independent learning apparently. We talked about how to raise children bilingually and the benefits exposure to different cultures can bring to child’s mental growth.

Patricia also suggested the book: The Power of Positive Parenting and I might just have to check this out myself.

  • The Vehicle Allocation Manager and Mom of Three
Viviana is a mom of 3 whose pumping journey was different each and every time. She talks about how she adapted to the changes and what pumping with 2 toddlers around is like. As 3 is a circus we talk about how she manages keeping the house together while working and staying sane. If you need a good laugh and some lighthearted uplifting humor surrounding pumping, this is the episode to listen to.

Viviana’s favorite resource was "Moms on Call" and I personally would suggest these books as an easily digestible resource for any new/repeat mom.

Moms on Call Basic Baby Care

Moms on Call: Next Steps Baby Care - 6-15 Months

Moms On Call Toddler Book (Moms On Call Parenting Books)

This last one is especially great for when you Toddler breaks and you need to fix them. I mean, when they turn from a sweet baby into an opinionated individual who does not quite know how to express their needs and wants and instead just burst out into an episode that might remind one of a 1980’s horror movie.

  • Amanda from ExclusivePumping.com

Amanda from ExclusivePumping.com is a well-known resource in the pumping world and I had the pleasure of hosting her as a guest on my show. In this episode we go back to the basics. She gives us advise on how to approach the pumping at work question with our bosses and how to prepare ourselves for this discussion by researching our rights. We talk about the worst-case scenario outcome and how to get around it. I asked her about the basic pumping must-haves, sterilization rules and milk storage.

Amanda is not only the creator of exclusivepumping.com but she also wrote two books Exclusive Pumping and Milk Supply and Weaning from the Pump. She started the Exclusive Pumping Facebook group that has over 29K followers and created the Exclusive Pumping newsletter.

In short, she is an amazing resource for any mom that is considering pumping and it is a must-read for any mom who wants to embark on this journey.

  • Pumping for Two sets of Twins

This is a must listen for anyone with twins, NICU experience or any labor and delivery nurses. In this episode, Kristina talks about her breastfeeding/pumping journey with two sets of twins and how they differed. She talks about the struggles and raw feelings that come with twins and preemies and I definitely teared up during our conversation. She inspired me in her fight to make breastfeeding work while in the hospital and she shares how it was incredible nurses who helped her find the strength to carry on.

I personally took away a lot of inspiration and strength from our conversation and I hope you all join me in following her on Instagram: @sinzz.twinzztwice

  • The Pump on the Road

    The Pump on the Road!

This was my favorite time saver. I know a lot of women who have used their commute to work to fit in a pump. If you have a commute that is at least 15 minutes long it might be worth trying out. In this episode I go through how I did it as a “best practice”. I also touch quickly on the second letdown and how I managed my work expectations while pumping in the office.

Pump used: Willow or Elvie, or add a battery pack to your plug in pump.

For your Plug in Pump get an inverter that would plug into the  automotive power socket.

I also talk about my favorite Pumping bra: Ollie Gray Bra. As it can be used for both nursing and pumping.

  • The Hairstylist

Emily is a hairstylist in West Hollywood who pumped for her daughter Harlow for about a year. Her profession requires her to be on her feet, in front of clients while providing them with the 5-star service they expect. In the hairstyling world, time is money and time away from her clients means she is missing out on opportunities. When she had to figure this out, she had no role models and no examples of how it can be done.

So Emily exclusively breastfeed her daughter for 3 months and then switched to pumping when she returned to work. She started blocking out time on her books every 3 hours so she could head to the backroom to pump.

  • The Corporate Architect
Melissa is a Corporate Architect who breastfed her first son for 10 months. Melissa had to start traveling when her son was 3 months old, and she talks about taking a girl’s trip before returning to work to test out the pumping and traveling under a less stressful environment. I loved this advice and that Melissa shared that pumping and dumping was her preferred option.

She also talks about how this second time around is a bit different as her second son was born during Covid and the times of “work from home”.

Since design is in her DNA, I also asked her about some of her favorite products and tips to keep us looking fresh and fashionable.

    Pump:

In our interview we discovered that Melissa’s pump, the Spectra 1, was rechargeable while mine, the Spectra 2, needed a battery pack to be able to do that. (I learned something new too)

  • The Primary Care Doctor
Jill is a primary care doctor and navigated pumping through patient visits and the covid pandemic. Jill started pumping her first week post-partum as she needed to increase her supply and even though she knew “fed is best” and formula was a completely fine option, she wanted to proof to herself that she could do it. Jill talks about how she fit in her pumping sessions by clearing her schedule from seeing patience during those pumping hours and how Covid turned all that upside down. She speaks about the pressures of breastfeeding and how stressful it was for her to constantly be tethered to a wall as the cordless pumps did not accommodate her flange size.

As a marathon runner, I asked Jill how she fit her two runs a week around her pumping schedule and how she avoided the drop in supply.

She also left us with hope, which was that even though she had low supply in the beginning, she had increased her supply so much that she had a 6-month freezer stash.

    Her Schedule:

Jill nursed her daughter once a day before bath time - and whenever she had clogged duct. The other times she tried to stick to the 3-hour pumping schedule, and she would block off those times on her calendar at work so that her office assistant would not schedule patients during those hours. When Covid hit, Jill took patient calls over zoom which allowed her to pump unnoticed while seeing patients.

    Her Pump:

Medela Symphony, (This is the one she rented) for a short time the Willow, in the beginning Medela Pump In Style, when had to be more portable Spectra S1
