In this episode, we share some thoughts about the 2020 election, Piper's infamous article, the role of the conscience in voting, the responsibility of the Christian in voting, and a common fallacy when it comes to the nature of the gospel and discipleship.
We recently had the honor and delight of sitting down with Pastor C.R. Wiley and having a casual conversation around an iPad (hence all the background, and sometimes foreground, noise).
Wiley's books on the productive household are top of the bag, and really should be required reading for every Christian man:
Man of the House: How to Build a Shelter That Lasts in a World That is Falling Apart — .
The Household and the War for the Cosmos — https://amzn.to/2QotIPN.
Here's the podcast episode we mentioned wherein we discuss the benefits of technology (that Aristotle anticipated), and how Christians should view their smart devices — https://anchor.fm/termon/episodes/How-Should-Christians-Think-About-Smart-Devices--parts-1-and-2-e8oosr.

Is retirement biblical? It's often assumed that retirement is not an option for Christians. But that depends a lot on how you define retirement, and what you plan to do in retirement.
This article talks about the problems with traditional retirement planning — https://www.richdad.com/prepare-for-retirement.
Here's a pretty good article on retirement from Crown Financial Ministries — https://www.crown.org/blog/what-does-the-bible-say-about-retirement-2/.
Here are a couple of helpful articles on the biblical idea of leaving an inheritance to your children — https://resourcesfordeacons.com/departments/inheritance/.
For overall financial philosophy, we recommend a mixture of (in this order): Gary North, Robert Kiyosaki, and Dave Ramsey.
And we must again recommend C.R. Wiley's book, Man of the House: A Handbook for Building a Shelter That Will Last in a World That is Falling Apart — https://amzn.to/3aFruVz.
Here is the Rachel Jankovic book we mentioned—a must-read for ladies—https://amzn.to/2Q9XnvZ. Her Facebook page is really worth following as well—https://www.facebook.com/racheljankovic.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, the apostle Paul instructs Christians to "pray without ceasing." But what does that mean? Toph and Jed tackle the question of how to follow that instruction in today's episode.
Prayer is simply the word we use for talking to God. God speaks to us through His written Word; and when we speak to Him, we call it prayer. But many Christians struggle to understand the power and simplicity of prayer. Below are some helpful resources to learn more about prayer in the life of the Christian.
In this blog post, Toph explains a simple method to help your prayer life when you struggle to find the words to say [https://tavernhall.wordpress.com/2018/08/16/praying-the-psalms/].
The great reformer, Martin Luther, once explained to his barder how to pray using the Lord's Prayer as a guide in this fascinating letter [https://static1.squarespace.com/static/58a73709414fb5ac487511d0/t/599e66ece3df2831f0e97eb3/1503553260932/Luther%2C+Martin.+A+Simple+Way+to+Pray.+Plain.pdf]
The Cripplegate blog has a helpful article on the "Right and Wrong Ways to Pray" [http://thecripplegate.com/right-wrong-ways-to-pray/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheCripplegate+%28The+Cripplegate%29].
Dr. Paul Henebury has a good introduction to prayer in this series [https://drreluctant.wordpress.com/2012/12/12/the-struggle-of-prayer-1/].
Two fascinating books that can serve as helpful aids to your prayer life are Piercing Heaven [https://amzn.to/2YU1G3U] and The Valley of Vision [https://amzn.to/2yVjqyw].

In today's episode, Toph tackles the doctrine of conditional immortality—the view that the souls of unbelievers will not remain in conscious torment in hell, but will be annihilated along with their bodies—as propounded by the folks at Rethinking Hell (http://rethinkinghell.com/).

Full Episode: We recently sat down with missionary and Bible teacher, Gene Cunningham, and asked him about the pandemic panic (and a few other things).
To hear more of Gene's teaching, find his books, and learn more about and support his ministry, go to basictraining.org.
If you're interested in learning more about the doctrine of eternal rewards, we would recommend starting with this series from Cripplegate: https://thecripplegate.com/degrees-of-reward-pt-1/.
Three books that may be helpful to learn more would be Grace, Salvation, and Discipleship (https://amzn.to/3c5b1cZ), The Preacher's Payday (https://amzn.to/2UNzKfQ), and Going for the Gold (https://amzn.to/3a5y45V). Gene also discussed the doctrine of rewards in more detail at his 2019 Uniontown conference (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/basic-training-bible-ministries/id1457836388?i=1000455954354), and will be dealing specifically with this doctrine at his upcoming Virginia conference, so be watching for that as well.
A good place to get started on some of the ideas that we discussed in the second part of the episode about community, self-reliance, and sustainable households would be C.R. Wiley's book, Man of the House (https://amzn.to/34p8Luj).

Matthew 12:40 says that Christ would be in the belly of the earth for three days and three nights; but that doesn't work with a Friday crucifixion. So, was Jesus actually crucified on Thursday—or even Wednesday?
This week being Passion Week, Pastor Toph is taking a few episodes to explain some interpretive difficulties that come up with regard to the chronology of the final days leading up to our Lord's death and resurrection, in order to show that when the Scripture is allowed to speak, it is always shown to be absolutely truthful and trustworthy.

The Gospel of John clearly explains that Jesus arrived in Bethany on the Friday before Passion Week, and there was held a meal in Christ's honor in Bethany on Saturday. And the Triumphal Entry then was on the next day—Sunday. However, Matthew and Mark both place the account of the meal in Bethany in the middle of their Tuesday narrative. So when did the meal take place? Saturday or Tuesday?
