  • Why God Looks On the Heart

Another episode from Pastor Toph's blog, explaining why it is that God looks on the heart: because only He can.

  • Choosing Fruitlessness?

Is it wrong for a married couple to choose childlessness? We would say, ordinarily, yes, but tell us more. This is a touchy and controversial subject, and we wade into it in today's episode.

We strongly encourage you to read these two articles from Michael Foster and Bnonn Tennant: "Fruitfulness is Normal" (https://itsgoodtobeaman.com/fruitfulness-is-normal/) and "If Marriages Should Be Fruitful, Can We Use Contraceptives" (https://itsgoodtobeaman.com/if-marriages-should-be-fruitful-can-we-use-contraceptives/).

This article containing the "press-for-puppy" illustration we mentioned is worth reading in its entirety — https://www.patheos.com/blogs/troublerofisrael/2018/09/if-you-dont-want-kids-dont-have-sex-or-get-married/.

Here is Doug Wilson's (much more succinct) answer to the question of married couples choosing childlessness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmbaXdbP_CI.

For further (and more academic) reading, here are two helpful articles from Alistair Roberts — https://theopolisinstitute.com/before-obergefell-some-thoughts-on-how-we-got-here/ and https://alastairadversaria.com/2012/05/19/marriage-and-procreation/.

  • Even Moore About That Invitation to "Go Home"

This is the audio of Pastor Toph's blog post explaining why John MacArthur told Beth Moore to go home, why everyone laughed, what could possibly be wrong with listening to Beth Moore, and why she really ought to... go home, that is.

Here's the relevant audio clip of the conversation—https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeNKHqpBcgc.

And here are some further resources for a biblical understanding of the issues:

  • More on MacArthur and Moore

Yes, we know this is old news now (we recorded it right when it happened though), but this discussion was still worth sharing—at least we think it was.

So, John MacArthur told Beth Moore to "go home," and the immediate evangelical uproar basically crashed the internet. In this impromptu episode, Jed asks pastor Toph a few clarifying questions about the whole thing.

Here's a link to the pertinent audio clip — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeNKHqpBcgc.

You can read Toph's blog post here, and we definitely recommend clicking on the videos and articles he links to at the end — https://tavernhall.wordpress.com/2019/10/27/moore-about-that-invitation-to-go-home/.

To study this topic further, we'd recommend starting with a few books such as:

  • Understanding Honor

What is honor? And in what way does God honor us? Honor plays a prominent role in Scripture, yet we frequently misunderstand it's definition, role, and import. In today's episode, Toph explains what honor is, horizontal honor and vertical honor, the difference between honoring God and being honored by God, and more.

To explore the topic further, we would recommend Honor, Patronage, Kinship & Purity, by David deSilva — https://amzn.to/2EG9woU.

  • Bonus Followup: Is Your Faith a Political Threat? A Case in Point

A brief followup to our episode on patriotism.

There are two groups of people who truly understand the threat of Christianity: those who are persecuted because of their Christian convictions, and those who do the persecuting.

As our allegiance to Christ increasingly comes into conflict with our ability to obey our earthly rulers, we need to be prepared to say with the apostles, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

To read more about the prophetic and political function of the church, we would recommend the book that shaped much of our thinking in this area: Political Church: The Local Assembly as Embassy of Christ’s Rule, by Jonathan Leeman — https://amzn.to/3954mOh.

And, while the Nashville Statement is commendable, we would rather recommend the Fortified Nashville Statement as an even more faithful and sound articulation of the biblical teaching on marriage and sexuality — https://warhornmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/The-Nashville-Statement-Fortified.pdf.

  • Christians and Patriotism?

How should Christians think about patriotism and love for one's country in balance with love for Christ and His kingdom? Toph and Jed discuss this huge topic in today's episode, arguing for some practical applications as well.

This was an early attempt at recording. It's actually the very first episode we ever recorded. Hopefully, the sound quality, and content quality, has improved since then and will continue to improve; but we wanted to share this discussion with you.

If you're interested in learning more about these issues, or perhaps are discouraged at the foreignness of some of these topics, we recommend the following resources.

Political Church, by Jonathan Leeman, has significantly shaped our understanding of these issues — https://amzn.to/31lTj0x.

Politics According to the Bible, by Wayne Grudem, is a helpful reference for Christians just wading into the topic — https://amzn.to/31ntygv.

Bastion Magazine (https://www.bastionmagazine.com/magazine?utm_source=termon) is a phenomenal journal on politics, culture, history, philosophy, economics, and literary and social criticism from a standpoint of traditional conservatism and Austrian economics. This is one of the most important resources you can get your hands on. The blog is worth following as well (https://www.bastionmagazine.com/blog).

Brion McClanahan has some excellent history lectures at McClanahan Academy — https://mcclanahanacademy.com/?affcode=167843_wdpv0cem.

  • How Should Christians Think About Smart Devices? [parts 1 and 2]

How should Christians think about their smart devices? Should we fear them? Use them cautiously? Use them freely with no concern at all?

Hi! Our names are Toph and Jed. In this, the pilot episode of By the Way, we discuss one comprehensive metaphor that we think helpfully answers all of our concerns and questions about smart devices and life in the digital age.

This was an early recording, and the sound quality will get better on future episodes. Also, Toph has a cold.

If you're interested in any of the books we mentioned in today's episode, follow the links below to get those resources and learn more!

Man of the House, by C.R. Wiley — https://amzn.to/36L3gqL (This is a must-read; you don't want to be without this book)

Politics, by Aristotle — https://amzn.to/2PWRMdJ (This is an excellent and important work, but it does take some time to work through; this is the best edition we've found)

These last two we haven't read ourselves, but wanted to link to them in case you are interested since we mentioned them.

12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You, by Tony Reinke — https://amzn.to/2NPZGTt

Life After Google, by George Gilder — https://amzn.to/2WUHa0d

A new book by Doug Wilson just came out—since we recorded this episode—and in it he deals with many of these same issues; it's well-worth your consideration. Ploductivity: A Practical Theology of Work & Wealth — https://amzn.to/2SfAp7B
