James 3:1-12 (NLT)
1. Guard your mouth.
(Ps. 141:3) “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth”
2. Use limited or thoughtful speech.
(Prov. 10:19) “When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise”
3. Communicate unselfishly.
(Phil. 2:4). “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others”
4. Speak pleasant words.
(Prov. 16:24) “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” .
5. Use edifying words.
(Eph. 4:29) “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification” .
6. Give “soft answers.
(Prov. 15:1) “A gentle answer turns away wrath”
7. Hear a matter before you answer it.
(Prov. 18:13) “He who gives an answer before he hears, it is folly and shame to him”
8. Speak timely words.
“A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word” (Prov. 15:23)
9. Speak the truth in Love.
“Speaking the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).
- Before you speak ask yourself is this truly from the place of Love.
Luke 6:45 (esv)
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
