There is a pattern to everything in life. One lesson that Daniel teaches us about patterns is there is also a secret to recognizing them and changing them. During the 1st week of Gut Check, Trent discusses the secret that Daniel knew that can change everything for us.

GAME ON has taught us that in life we all have a journey. The great thing about the journey we are on is that we can allow God, the creator, to guide us through this journey. Just like video games, our journey will bring us to a point of crisis; a moment in which we must react in order to continue or to save the day. We can look toward what we know about the game and what we have learned to get us through those moments of crisis. In life, we can look to Jesus as our hope.

We all want at least a few things to be different, to be better, but are we willing to do something about it? When Jesus confronted the paralyzed man, he was waiting for a quick fix, he was blaming everyone else for his condition, and he completely left God out of the equation. Jesus saw right through his excuses because he knew the man would never get better as long as he allowed his excuses to fester. It was time for him to get up, do what he could do and trust God with the results.

Turn the other cheek. Don’t judge. Don’t worry. Those are all things that are easier said than done. But guess what? Jesus said them. Jesus said some pretty radical things in His day. So many times, He would flip the way people thought and did things completely upside down. Instead of revenge...forgive or to gain your life, you must first be willing to lose it. During one of his sermons, He shared the secret to living a blessed life, but instead of money, fulfilled dreams and happiness, he said blessed are those who are persecuted. What? Persecution = blessings?

If you want to keep believers from growing, give them a list to follow. When you do that, there's no opportunity to step out and get closer to God. So many of us were raised with a version of Christianity that focused on the do's and don'ts and left out the fact that Jesus is our advocate. Who are you going to trust? Your advocate or your accuser?

We tend to complicate and over think faith. I have always been amazed that children will believe just about anything we tell them. At first glance it seems very naive but upon closer inspection, children exhibit certain characteristics that makes them stand out in the eyes of and heart of Jesus.

We aren't perfect. We mess up. So, when we're told to "Be like Jesus" it can be discouraging. But, what if being like Jesus had less to do with being perfect and more to do with having the same attitude as Jesus and how we treat those around us? To God, being like Jesus can be ordinary, and it's less about you than you think.

No matter where we are in our spiritual journey, we all have a next step we should take, and baptism is the very first thing Jesus tells us to do once we've committed our lives to Him. This week, we will be discussing what the big deal about being baptized is.
