MY FELLOW CACIQUES! Today, we're looking at a few things, which include: Puerto Rico Male Youth (16-24) Unemployment to compare to US numbers, 2018 Occupational & Wage Statistics, and Indicadores Economicós from the Junta de Planificación. The discussion of the minimum wage has taken social media by storm, so we'll also go over that which was sparked by the public hearing had between Natal and industry representatives that made the issue of minimum wage a hot topic once again.
MY FELLOW CACIQUES! In episode 5, we look at the labor market for La Ciudad Romántica. Studies have shown that unemployment rates are correlated with crime, therefore it's important to take a look at how unemployment is performing not only at the national level, but at the municipal level. We look at employment levels, unemployment levels/rates, and labor force participation levels/rates. Labor force participation in Puerto Rico has hovered around 40%, much lower than the US labor force participation rate of 60%. However, municipal rates can vary, and employment experience at the national level does not resemble employment experience at the municipal level. Along with the population decline and migration, low unemployment rates may not be painting a complete picture.
My fellow caciques! Here I look at the crime stats for Camuy, PR, also known as La Ciudad Romántica. I get data from the police department via the Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico from May 2016 to August 2019 to look at eight (8) different Type 1 Crime Categories: murder, rape, aggravated assault, human trafficking, robbery, breaking & entering, illegal appropriation and car theft. With the news media portraying rampant crime, I decided to take a look at the monthly statistics for crime in the municipality that I live in. Eventually, I'll get to the big cities like Bayamon, Carolina, Ponce, and San Juan, where most crime happens.
HELLO MY FELLOW CACIQUES!
I bought a book called "Ensayos Para Una Nueva Economía: Desarrollo Económico de Puerto Rico", which contains a collection of essays written by professors. I'll be focusing on one titled: "Otro Desarrollo es Posible: Mujeres y Economía en Puerto Rico". The essay talks about the capitalist, patriarchal society we live in and how it oppresses women and their solutions to the problem at hand. The authors say that the solutions have already been implemented in some of the most gender equal countries in the world, yet in the eyes of the authors, even these countries are not doing enough for gender equality. I go over the topics discussed in the essay and look at NCES and IPEDS data to see what men and women choose for study and work.
On Episode 2 of Caciques United,
Justin Bieber posts an emotion-filled letter for all to read, reviewing life as a child star. The Boston Straight Pride Parade is absurd, and so is the "Straight Sex as Rape" flyers. A quick review of Puerto Rican history and the original Puerto Rican Day Parade shows why a straight pride parade is not needed. A recent study published titled "Latino Representation in Film: Erasure On Screen & Behind the Camera" has made headlines and received the attention of many. What's right and wrong with the study is seen here on Caciques United.
