In Part 2/2 in our exploration of post-9/11 horror and how the wake of a national tragedy twisted our films, we turn to J.J Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard. CLOVERFIELD (2008) is a found footage giant monster movie that implores imagery from the terrorist attack and a group attempt to survive in a ravaged New York City.
Joined again by Austin Torres (Would You Die? Podcast, Spider short film), we talk about healing through validation vs escapism, the depiction of the military, and of course compare it all back to RED EYE (2005) from last episode.

Riding a plane alongside dreamy-eyed Cillian Murphy may seem like a typical rom-com set-up, but it’s 2005 and you can’t trust anyone. The Dogs are joined by fellow podcaster/filmmaker Austin Torres (Would You Die? Podcast, Spider short film) to soar through the paranoia and patriotism that followed 9/11, and horror legend Wes Craven just so happened to direct this Rachel McAdams thriller, RED EYE (2005).
And join us next week for Part Two, where we’ll be discussing the found footage giant monster flick CLOVERFIELD (2008).

Part two in our series: This time, revenge is served with a side of fire ants and yes, even more blood. Chloé Harper Gold (writer, critic) is back to analyze Coralie Fargeat's Revenge. This new French extremity film has us questioning if this female director successfully subverts the male gaze.

Revenge is a dish best served bloody, hanged, and run over with a motorboat. The Dogs are joined by friend of the pod Chloé Harper Gold (writer, critic) for their analysis of the always controversial horror sub-genre of rape revenge. Starting off with the original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE: is this an exploitation movie or could this actually be a feminist film masquerading as one?
Then, join us next week for PART TWO where we analyze Coralie Fargeat's REVENGE (2017).

David and Rob discuss family values and Reaganism (of course) in FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) and X (2022), in this episode that was originally uploaded in September 2022 -- right before Pearl was released! With that trilogy now complete, and with summer camp back in session, we felt this was the perfect time to bring this one back.

Here’s Doggy! To celebrate covering 100 films on the show, the Dogs tackle the most overanalyzed, the most intimidating film yet: Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. David and Devin cover all the greatest out-there theories brought to us by the documentary Room 237. But also bring in some original analysis on themes of alcoholism, abuse, 2nd wave feminism, and racial dynamics. And then spend time talking about filmmaking ethics and what makes a good director - for you film nerds out there!

Have you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?
This month, we’re joined by director Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface, The Geechee Witch), to discuss the great red menace which must be extinguished by any means necessary!
1950s Americana is met with an existential threat in the form of shapeshifting aliens which mean to replace our way of life, our entire way of thinking, in the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956), directed by Don Siegel. But is this threat really a metaphor for Communism, or is it meant to represent Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare? Perhaps the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, or at least that’s somewhat the stance of our second film, THE BLOB (1988), directed by Chuck Russell, itself a remake of another 1950s Cold War metaphor. Of course, this is the 80s, and so Reagan is bound to come up a few times.
From the early days of the Cold War to the final days, how has America’s shifting views of the Soviet Union affected the media we create? Is the greater threat an invading force, or is the call coming from inside the house? Let’s dig into the glorious sci-fi horror, mutts!

Ah, the American Dream: a suburban home with a white picket fence, green grass, and the perfect nuclear family. Until… ding dong! It’s the boogeyman! Filmmaker Emily Bennett (Alone With You) joins David and Devin to discuss false utopias, the repercussions of repression, and why you should always face your fears.
The Dogs take on Freddy Kreuger once again in the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, written and directed by Wes Craven. And then tackle M. Night Shyamalan’s classic THE VILLAGE - with a twist (obviously).
