The Life and Kidnapping of Steven Stayner, Part 9: The Law: Two preliminary hearings and two trials would mean that Steven Stayner’s life would continue to be wrapped up with Parnell. As a witness and victim, the law should be clear in punishing Parnell for his horrible crimes, but Steven and the District Attorney have a long road to justice with many obstacles. Just hours after Steven Stayner and Timothy White were found they both would be thrust in front of cameras to answer questions in what would become one of the biggest kidnappings in American history. In this episode we talk about the role the press played and give details of the experiences in the two days following Steven and Timothy’s escape.

After 7 years of being kidnapped, Steven Stayner would make one of the biggest decisions of his life when he refused to let Kenneth Parnell hurt another child and brought 5 year old Timothy White into police. This act would dramatically change his life and the lives of the Stayner Family and the White Family.

During the 7 years Kenneth Parnell held Steven Stayner as a kidnap victim he would attempt several times to kidnap other children. In 1980, he would succeed and once again he would find a person he could take advantage of that would help him. On Feb. 14, 1980, Parnell would kidnap Timothy White. For seven years, Steven Stayner lived a life with Kenneth Parnell he believed had been given custody of him by a judge. Like far too many children, Steven would be hurt by the man he had come to think of as a father, and would suffer terrible sexual abuse. But he also lived a life with friends, school, animals and hobbies as he traveled with Parnell across California. Often upset that the coverage of his life only focused on the bad parts we discuss Steven’s life during the time he was kidnapped and take aim at society’s judgements of abuse that continue to keep victims silent.
