In Part One of this three-part conversation, Deneen sits down with Pastor Nathaniel Simpson of The Forgiving Church to talk honestly about church hurt, faith, accountability, forgiveness, boundaries, discipleship, and what healing can look like without losing your relationship with God.

In this conversation with Sheila Sharpley-East, we explore the past, present, and future of East Cleveland, Ohio—and what it will take for the people who love the city to have a meaningful role in what comes next.

Sheila reflects on the East Cleveland she remembers: homeowners invested in their neighborhoods, strong community connections, thriving schools, and families who understood that what happened at City Hall mattered at home. East Cleveland history, Black homeownership, racial covenants, and historic preservation collide in Sheila Sharpley-East’s remarkable story of owning a Rockefeller-connected mansion on Euclid Avenue.

Sheila shares how a house she dreamed about for years eventually became hers—and why preserving it became about much more than architecture. The historic Rockefeller-Rudd House was once home to Mary Ann Rockefeller Rudd, sister of John D. Rockefeller, and her husband, William Cullen Rudd. But perhaps the most powerful part of its history is found in an old property deed that stated that no Black person could own or live on the property.

Today, Sheila owns it.

Together, we discuss what East Cleveland loses when historic homes are demolished, the extraordinary craftsmanship found inside its century-old houses, the legacy of racial housing restrictions, Black homeownership as reclamation, and the responsibility we have to reinvest in the communities that helped shape us.

From original woodwork, leaded glass, built-in cabinetry, and clawfoot tubs to homes connected to some of Cleveland’s most influential families, Sheila reminds us that preservation isn’t simply about saving old buildings. It’s about protecting the stories, history, craftsmanship, and cultural memory that disappear when those buildings are gone.

And ultimately, we wrestle with a larger question:

What do we owe the communities that raised us—even if we no longer live there?

What was it really like growing up in East Cleveland, Ohio before so much of the community changed?

In Part 1 of this three-part conversation, I sit down with East Cleveland native Sheila Sharpley to remember the city that helped shape both of us, and to tell a story about East Cleveland that too often gets lost when the conversation focuses only on decline.

Sheila remembers a community where almost everything you needed was right in your own neighborhood: grocery stores, movie theaters, skating, restaurants, photography studios, local businesses and streets filled with families who knew and looked out for one another. We also reflect on front porches, neighborhood traditions, homeownership, Shaw High School and the pride that once made East Cleveland feel less like simply a city and more like home.

Together, we discuss the history and culture of East Cleveland, Black community and homeownership, neighborhood pride, the importance of preserving our stories, what has been lost, and why people like Sheila still believe East Cleveland's story is far from finished. Sheila describes looking beyond what the city is today and believing in what it can become again.

This conversation is for anyone who remembers the East Cleveland of another generation, anyone who has watched their hometown change, and anyone who believes that reclaiming our history is part of reclaiming our communities.

For me, this conversation is especially personal. East Cleveland, and particularly Shaw High School, helped teach me to dream bigger and exposed me to possibilities I had never imagined for myself.

The public estate disputes involving the families of Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Chadwick Boseman raise difficult questions about marriage, inheritance, trusts, prenuptial agreements and protecting the people we leave behind.

In this episode of Calm & Cultured Collective, I share why these stories hit close to home as a wife and mother—and why love alone is not an estate plan. We discuss the uncomfortable conversations families often avoid, what can happen when financial promises are not properly documented, and why Black families must become more intentional about estate planning and generational wealth.
