We were sinners trapped in darkness, but God has given us his light in Jesus Christ. Jesus is our King, but he is also our loving Savior who has come to take away our sin. Therefore, we should lay down our attempts to save ourselves and place our faith wholly in him. Luke 2:1-20

Mary’s incredible trust in God, as she declares herself “the Lord’s servant,” is the perfect model for us. It prefigures the trust in the Father shown by her child Jesus, who emptied himself and became a servant. We must have faith in God like a child has faith in his or her loving parent. Even when it feels like God is far off, we can trust that he is working because he is faithful to his Word. God’s discipline toward us is a sign that he loves us and isn’t giving up on us. Because of this, we can trust that he has our best interests at heart. Luke 1:5-20
