Jesus The Light Of The World

John 1: 6-13

1. We should witness about the light (6-8) “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light”…

2. We should adore the beauty of the light (9) “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world”…

3. We should pray for those who resist the light (10-11) “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him”…

4. We should celebrate that many will receive the light (12-13) “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

The Hope That Sustains Us

1 Peter 1: 3-9

We all need hope more than ever. As Christians, our hope is never abstract but living and constant because our hope never comes from temporal things or circumstances but our hope is in Christ. 1st and 2nd Peter teaches us that…

1. God establishes our hope in Christ (3) “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”…

2. God maintains our hope in Christ (4-5) “to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time”…

3. God makes our hope joyful in Christ (6-9) “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials…Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory”…

We Have A Message To Proclaim

1 Peter 1: 22-25

The message we have to proclaim as followers of Christ is the gospel. The word gospel simply means “good news”. The good news is…

-Because of God’s love he did not leave us

in our sin.

-Jesus, God in human flesh came to us and lived perfectly according to God’s plan.

-Jesus came to rescue us. He did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He took our sin and shame to the cross, paying the penalty of our sin by His death.

-Jesus was then raised from the dead to provide the only way for us to be rescued and restored to a relationship with God who created us.

-We admit we are sinners and ask God to forgive us as we turn from our sin trusting only Jesus to save us.

-Believing, we receive new life through Jesus and God turns our lives in a new direction.

Therefore, we proclaim…

1. Jesus cleanses us from our sin and allows us to love one another (22) “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart”…

2. Jesus changes us by giving us a new nature according to His Word (23-24) “since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God”…

3. Jesus calls us to believe His Word that abides for all eternity (25) “but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.”

A Picture Of Practical Holiness

1 Peter 3: 8-12

Practical, everyday, holiness in the life of the maturing Christian…

1. Encourages unity of mind and purpose among the church (8) “have unity of mind”…

2. Demonstrates the love of Christ to other believers (8) “have sympathy, brotherly love and a tender heart”…

3. Thinks lowly of themselves and highly of others (8) “and a humble mind”…

4. Avoids the retaliation for evil (9) “Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling”…

5. Extends blessings to all people (9) “but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing”…

A Lifestyle To Embrace

1 Peter 1:13-25

Personal holiness is a lifestyle we must embrace as God’s children.

 

1. Personal holiness is an intentional preparation of the mind to hope in Christ (13) “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”…

2. Personal holiness is an act of loving obedience to your heavenly Father

(14-17) “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct”…

3. Personal holiness is a result of being redeemed through the blood of Jesus (18-21) “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot”…

4. Personal holiness comes by devotion to God’s Word and love for others
