Jesus has withdrawn from the area of opposition and goes to another area where a Canaanite woman comes to him, crying out for mercy for her demon-possessed daughter. Pastor Lloyd provides some interesting backdrop about this woman and the culture from which she comes. Jesus commends and rewards her for her faith. Large crowds continue to follow with many healings and the feeding of four thousand.

Without the Holy Spirit, we are a great source of unused power. He is the one who brings together all the disparate and disconnected life-elements we don't understand. God's part is to fill us: our part is to yield as the Lord of the Harvest, the Holy Spirit, lets nothing be wasted. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that the prayers of the saints are woven together to accomplish the greater work of God the Father. This is the work of the Spirit in and upon us.

In the fifteenth chapter of Matthew, the religious leaders think they've trapped Jesus with the question of why his disciples don't wash their hands when they eat bread. Jesus' retort quickly turns the tables when he shines the spotlight back on them and their transgressions as "hypocrites." Thanks to the Apostle Peter's question to Jesus, we learn that the real problem here is a heart issue.

In this third part of the Holy Spirit series, Pastor Lloyd helps us understand the very personal nature of the Holy Spirit, who is not it, but He. It is He who breathes into us the breath of life. He helps us discern truth, He regenerates, He convicts, He is the guarantee and seal of your inheritance in Christ. It was the Holy Spirit who directed Paul and the apostles on their missionary journeys. It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us all things and brings to remembrance all that Jesus has said. As the seed of Jesus' teaching has fallen on different hearts, we must personally consider our own heart's receptiveness. Following this teaching, we come to Herod's beheading of John the Baptist, Jesus' feeding of the five thousand and the great astonishment of the apostles when they see Jesus and Peter walk on water. Matthew continues his gospel with a preponderance of evidence for the skeptics.

The second teaching in this series begins with the early church and the admonition to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. This is like learning to speak a new language, says Pastor Lloyd. This is one test for followers who want to know if they are filled with the Spirit: the words we speak. This quality doesn't come by nature or by our own efforts but through the work of the Holy Spirit. Even in the most difficult times, when we think our life is over, through the eyes of the Holy Spirit, we can come to an entirely new, life-changing perspective.

Matthew continues to present his case to the doubters. This passage looks at Jesus' final three parables pertaining to the Kingdom of heaven; it is like a treasure hidden in a field, like a merchant seeking fine pearls; and like a dragnet cast to gather fish.
