In the first days on the life of Christ we meet Simeon and learn that the Holy Spirit revealed to him that he would see Christ before his death. Simeon prophecies about the Lord and also addresses Joseph and Mary. We also meet Anna, a prophetess, who did not depart from the temple, but she served God for at least 84 years with fastings and prayers. She sees the Lord and instantly gives thanks. This passage points to the glory of God through the testimony of Simeon and Anna, both Spirit-filled and faithful to His will.

In this sermon we learn about the history of the decree handed down by Augustus Caesar to have a census taken. Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem on account of the census and Mary gives birth to Jesus Christ. An angel of the Lord visits shepherds nearby to give the announcement, "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (v. 11). This passage points to the glory of God through the birth of Christ.
