In this sermon from Genesis 3:15, we explore the protoevangelium—the first gospel. Right at the point of humanity’s greatest failure, God announces a promise: evil will be defeated. A Deliverer is coming, born of a woman, who will crush the serpent’s head and redeem His people.

This single verse weaves together the whole story of Scripture, from Eden to the empty tomb. Jesus is the true seed of the woman, the second Adam, who triumphs through suffering. As Jim Hamilton writes, “In the short span of Genesis 3:14–19, the God of the Bible is shown to be both just and merciful.”

This is the gospel that still speaks today—because the promise has been kept, and the victory has been won.
