Stephen Lane speaks with Mike Neglia about the cleansing of the temple (Matthew 21:12–17), following up on Sunday’s sermon. Together they reflect on the boldness of Jesus — a Saviour who is not afraid to confront injustice and overturn what corrupts worship.

Their conversation draws out the striking parallel to Leviticus 14, where a priest inspects a house for mould, returning for a second inspection and, if necessary, ordering the house to be torn down. In the same way, Jesus enters His Father’s house — the temple — not as a mere visitor but as the rightful priest-king, inspecting and acting to purify it.

Mike and Stephen also wrestle with contemporary questions: when is it appropriate to charge for things in a church? What is Baptism?

Baptism is an ordinance of the church, which means that it is something that Jesus ordained Hisfollowers to do, in perpetuity, until His return. Some Christians refer to baptism as a sacramentbecause it is a sacred ceremony, given to us by Jesus Himself.

Baptism is the simple act of going under water and emerging again, but it is imbued withsignificance, because it is a re-enactment of the gospel message. Jesus lived, died and wasburied, then rose from the grave in resurrection power. The believer in Jesus has died to their oldselves, and is raised in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)

It is also a symbol of the cleansing away of our sins.

Why should you be baptised?

It is an expected part of the Christian life.Jesus tells us to,
the earliest church practiced it,

the Epistles instruct us on it (and assume that all believers have been baptised)It is a public profession of faith
It is an encouragement for the rest of the church

What if you already were baptised as an infant?

Infant baptism is a common but incorrect practice, and amongst the RCC, COI and Protestantdenominations there are varying degrees of well intentioned error.
A wonderful display of your parents faith, and their hope for you, but the Bible portrays baptism asthe willing choice of people who have already believed.
It is proper to seek out a biblical baptism.

The Lord is mindful of the cares and concerns of His people. Those who know His name put their trust in Him and are assured that He not only knows, but cares, when they are in pain.

David notes that God is with His people not just when everything is going smoothly, but also during difficult times. In Psalm 23, David testifies that the Lord is his shepherd. He is David's shepherd when He makes him lie down in green pastures or leads him beside still waters. The Lord is also David's shepherd in the valley of the shadow of death. David fears no evil because the Lord is with him.

I pray that we can all find comfort in this.
