Holding on in a hostile world is a major theme of 1 Peter. Writing to believers who were experiencing great suffering for their faith, Peter seeks to bring encouragement to continue to stand for the Lord in a world that is not our home. This encouragement begins by reminding us of the living hope that followers of Christ have been born into.

Though it is easy to submit our lives to those who treat us fairly and rightly honor our God, it is a totally different reality when those in authority over us conduct themselves in the totally opposite way. Peter writes to let us know that submission is still right and proper even in these circumstances and it gives us the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our Savior.

As we see in today's passage, Jesus provided four witnesses to show that He was who He said He was. He used John the Baptist as a witness, His works as a witness, The Father, and The Word of God. Can He use you as a witness?

Today we will see the spontaneous reaction of praise that comes forth out of Deborah and Barak in what is known as the song of Deborah. God had not only defeated their enemies and set them free, He had done it in a most miraculous way as we saw last week! Pastor Mark also presents us all with a challenge from the song of Deborah, and that is to pray about our role in the “battlefield”. What has God called us to do in service to Him? Where do we fit in with the gifts he has given to us?
