It's October and it's time to vote!! Starting in the Province of BC this October 19, the Canadian Provincial elections are among us. And it is not without surprise that we are pro-voting!

What is the engagement at the polls for New Canadian voters? And what even are the political parties? Is the Green Party only about climate change? Which party reflects the majority of Canadians? What demographic of people do Conservatives want to provide tax cuts for? And can the Liberal Party keep their promises?

Join us as we get political and honest. We'll detail the various political parties in Canada, focusing on their stances on Indigenous issues, human rights and gender equality. We'll highlight the importance of choosing leaders who represent the collective good over individual privilege and stress the importance that your vote really does count.

We won’t tell you who to vote for but we will stress the importance to think of the collective good when you go to the ballot. And just in case you still think your vote doesn’t matter, learn about the legal requirements for those riding their sleigh in Ontario. EVERYTHING is affected by politics. Engage and go out and vote!

We dive into the harmful lies recently and continuously being platformed at rallies and in debates by Donald Trump. His lie: Haitian immigrants are eating pets. These lies are not just infuriating but also dangerous - especially when they are platformed and held unaccountable. We discuss how these narratives have weight in Canada, perpetuating the blame and resentment towards immigrants for issues like housing and jobs. We stress the importance of accountability and urge people to get the facts straight from the source, addressing misinformation head-on.

Join us as we fight the dehumanizing rhetoric and hold the liars accountable because the system will only ever work for itself - not for people. So, let's take a stand!

Show Note: As of this recording, multiple b*mb threats, shooting threats, death threats at schools, hospitals, organized events including harassment and fear have harmed Haitian Immigrants in Springfield, OH. Formal investigations have been made into the claim and have been proven to be false. The source responsible for the lie has since apologized for perpetuating it. The Haitian Bridge Alliance has formally filed charges against Trump and Vance for "disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, aggravated menacing and complicity. The filing asks the Clark County Municipal Court to affirm that there is probable cause and issue arrest warrants against Trump and Vance." As of September 26, Mr. Trump is continuing to spread these lies at rallies and at press events. We press and advocate for justice for Haitian immigrants and all immigrants who bear the brunt of racist and inhumane lies.

In a recent study, more than 50% of immigrants surveyed that they have little knowledge of the Canada's truth of the genocide and assimilation of Indigenous Peoples. As immigrants to Canada, we come with immense privileges in accessing community resources and government supports. But a big part is missing when we are not taught the truth and the reality of the Original People's experiences in Canada. If we want to integrate into Canada, becoming an ally to Indigenous people is a vital part of it.

September 30th marks a significant day as a result of Action #80 in the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Act. As immigrants, we need to not only recognize our privileges but our responsibilities towards advocacy and allyship for Indigenous rights and agency. Allyship isn't a check box, a competitive sport that we trophy around for accolade and pride.

Allyship is a way of life, a journey and a constant way of being. As immigrants, we need to elevate, amplify and uplift voices of others whom have not been listened to. We have a responsibility and we have immense privilege on this beautiful part of the world to remember, to learn and to be changed. It is our right, our responsibility and our privilege to be an ally. And it's never too late to start.

Another naysayer commented on our TikTok said that if immigrants can't be polite like Canadians, then they should leave. It is a narrow and outdated notion that the social construct of politeness isn't found in newcomers and immigrants in Canada. As if countries around the world don't have high standards of politeness, the ask is expecting immigrants to have a superhuman attitude, permitting predominantly white presenting Canadians to be impolite as often as they wish. And news flash, there are some impolite Canadians. 

A one-size-fits-all narrative doesn't reflect the diversity of people or even the world around us. But sure, go ahead and tell the sunset that it needs to look the same every single night. 

Sigh . . . . assimilation is boring, bland and honestly, really lame. Culture is exciting. And we said all of this with our pinkies in the air just to be polite.

In August of this year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently established a new policy for international students wherein their post-graduate work permits will not be renewed. Students who have created communities, established jobs and started families will need to return to their countries of origin. The impact will be devastating in this ecosystem we call 'Canada'.

Andrea and Hostion will discuss the essential role international students play in Canada's economy and education system and how abrupt policy changes are causing chaos. After immigration being open for so many years, you'd think that people would come up with something new to blame immigrants for. But alas, here we are, in the 21st century and people are still blaming immigrants for housing and employment issues. Welcome to the immigrant blame game where dusty, lame tropes and uncurious minds fill the air.

While most of us are exhausted by this rhetoric, we're slapping back and breaking down why current issues are not the fault of immigrants but are actually the fault of systemic issues like capitalism and government policies - which are failing a lot of people. The blame goes towards the made-up systems that we created. And news flash: we can transform this made up system! It's true! But we have to stop blaming each other and work hard to create something better.

Last week, a new magazine, 'Three', launched in Canada. Inspired and created by a Third Culture Kid (TKC), Muraly Srinarayanathas' new publication is set to shatter stereotypes and spotlight the vibrant lives of third culture people in Canada. We dive into the term coined by Ruth Useem in the '50s and take a ride through identity crises, cultural roots, and the inspirational perspectives TCKs bring to the table. Emotional resilience, an understanding of cross cultural communication and a global perspective are truly the components Canada needs to guide the future. And these are all embodied in third culture kids.

How do you define yourself? Is it based on where you originated from? Your ancestors? Your race? In a colonial system, why must we have to defend who we are? Isn’t how we self-identify enough? 

In August of this year, the Federal Government awarded billions of dollars to non-verified Indigenous businesses. Proving who we are to a system which tells us who we need to be isn’t living our human experience at all. As the backdrop for our kick off of the second season of Canadian Salad, we will take a deep dive into the complex issues of identity, race, culture, and ethnicity. There is nuance and complexity in identity, with our ever evolving journey into new locations, new cultures and new societies.

Self-determination is a right. And it’s also complicated. How do we advocate for that right for ourselves and for others in Canada? What does a self-determined society look like - especially for underrepresented people? Join us for our first episode of Season Two!
