  • Use Your Voice! Jill’s Story

In this episode Charlotte & Greg talk to Jill, a laryngectomy patient who had cancer of the oesophagus and has had to have her larynx removed. She now speaks with the aid of an ectrolarynx.

This has been very difficult to adapt to. In a world where we often talk too much, communicating has become a challenge. It is also people’s reactions as is it is a result of her cancer journey that she can’t easily hide.

However, she may have lost her voice box but she certainly hasn’t lost her voice!

For a long time her cancer was dismissed as just a bad sore throat. Jill wants to share with others her journey and impress that you must use your voice and speak up when you think something is wrong. .

Jill also explains the other complications and major impacts the treatment has had on her life that you can’t see, both physically and emotionally. However, something she has realised is sharing with others is the most important thing to do to help you get through this.

Although her own journey is far from over, she has learnt most of all it really is good to talk!

Jill finds great outlet and expression in dancing. She taught Charlotte and her father their father of the bride dance for her wedding with partner Colin.

Contact ‘Could I Have This Dance’ www.couldihavethisdance.danceorg.uk for fantastic dance classes in north Surrey with Jill & Colin.

Jill would also recommend the Facebook ‘UK & Europe Laryngectomy Support Group’ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1021486454662402/?ref=share for others in her situation.

  • You Can Do It! Chiara's Story

In this episode Charlotte & Greg talk to Chiara, a young Italian woman who has been fighting advanced melanoma for the past couple of years.

Chiara was only 33 and recently married when she noticed her mole was bleeding, something that advanced more quickly than anyone could have expected. She was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma with multiple mitosis.

The cancer was already 3cm deep and spreading fast. She was immediately put through powerful treatment, which triggered multiple organ failures, but she stayed strong and positive and got through her treatment.

They found out that Chiara's skin cancer was nothing to do with the sun but a mutated gene. Prevention would have saved her a lot of pain and sorrow, so she hopes that in the future everyone will be genetically tested to help prevent diseases like hers from occuring unnoticed in the first place.

Sadly, one of the consequences of the treatment is its impact on fertility. Despite having just married and wanting a large family, she can't even consider pregnancy until 5 years into her treatment. She also opted to undergo fertility treatment, just in case, so underwent IVF to freeze her eggs for the future, something that  is thankfully included by the public healthcare service in Italy.

Chiara hasn't given up on the hope of having a big family one day or let the cancer slow her down. Now she is over the worst of it, she wants to share her story and extremely positive outlook to help raise awareness. She went through hell and back but is still smiling and wants everyone to know not to give up, you can get through it, no matter what!

Chiara and her husband Andrea have a company and  YouTube channel  called Mode Zero! they host creatives and support underground creative music in their beautiful home in Conegliano Italy and livestream music. They also discuss Chiara's cancer journey on the channel: https://youtube.com/c/ModeZeroOfficial Please like, share and subscribe to show your support!

  • Stage 4 Deserves More! Charlii's Story

In this episode Charlotte & Greg talk to Charlii, a very active social media advocate for stage 4 breast cancer patients like herself. Charlii is a mother, wife, nurse and now also a stage 4 breast cancer patient. She checked her breasts regularly but that didn't prevent her from finding a lump under the age of 40, making up only 4% of all breast cancer patients.

Even more shocking, within three weeks she was told it was already Stage 4, meaning it had spread to other parts of the body, known as Secondary Cancer. This is the leading cause of death in women under 50 in the UK, yet only 5% of charity funding is dedicated to it. Being Stage 4 presents itself with additional, unexpected obstacles. Charlii has become not only an advocate for herself, but for others like her, to raise awareness and spread the message that stage 4 deserves more!

You can follow Charlii, and her story, on her instagram page @tinypartofmystory She is also an advocate for The Future Dreams Breast Cancer Charity https://futuredreams.org.uk/ @futuredreamscharity based in London and Secondary Sisters Charity who help support young adults with a secondary cancer diagnosis https://www.trekstock.com/secondary-sisters If you would like to donate or gain support from them please visit their websites.
