The original Christmas story was full of dreams too: hopeful dreams, born in the dark, for a brighter future. Christmas began with a dream; was sustained by dreams; and ultimately became a dream come true.

It all comes together to remind us that what we believe matters. Our actions and sense of urgency are all built on a foundation of beliefs—but what if we didn't know? What if we had it wrong? Changing course and admitting we're wrong is rare. Yet, 200 years ago, the story of Awakening would have its most lasting impact when one man admitted he was wrong.

It was a brave move, and it changed the spiritual temperature of Cape Cod for over 50 years.

In 1809 on Monday, April 24, a young man named Barnabas Bates came to Falmouth. The sermon he preached would spark a remarkable awakening. But it wasn't just in Falmouth: God was about to stir up revival in Sandwich, Mashpee, Barnstable, and on Martha's Vineyard... It's a story you have to hear.

History may not always repeat itself, but it does tend to rhyme. This is the story of 1809, but it could also be the story of today. In this message, we'll explore what exactly God comes to do, and what an awakening looks like. We're praying for awakening: "God do it again… in me and on Cape Cod."

We pray for a reason… we want.

Wanting has a negative stereotype, but in prayer; it's invited. It's the way of the people who follow Jesus. Wanting declares we want something more—we need something more. "I want" is the cry of couples, parents, the hurting, addicts, and the anxious.

What we want is an awakening, a revival of something in us and maybe around us. That's what I want.
