  • Does Size Matter? Shipping Operational Performance & Fleet Size - Deep Dive Into The Moore Maritime Index
    Wednesday, July 8, 2020, 10:00 AM EDT
A new study by Moore calls into question the popular belief that consolidation and scale inevitably result to lower operating costs.Surveying more than 150 companies managing in excess of 1,500 vessels globally in the dry bulk and tanker sectors, data is grouped under four categories based on fleet size under management : 1-5 vessels, 6-10 vessels, 11-20 vessels, more than 20 vessels. It also takes into consideration vessel age and size, as well as sector income performance. The study aims at identifying possible relationships between fleet size and vessel operational performance.A one-on-one discussion on the study, its methodology and conclusions will follow a brief introductory presentation:

  • Seafarers - Safeguarding The Backbone of Shipping Beyond COVID-19 - ICS, ITF & IMEC
    Wednesday, July 1, 2020, 9:00 AM EDT
The unprecedented challenges of the current environment have drawn attention again to the key role and function of Seafarers, who are the backbone of the maritime industry. When the world was in global lockdown, ships kept sailing, picking up and delivering cargo and keeping the global supply chain uninterrupted. This could not have been achieved without the endurance and commitment of the crews on board. But the issues related to Seafarers, who originate from several countries around the world, go well beyond the COVID-19 era. The shipping industry depends on the continued supply of well trained and well treated Seafarers who choose a maritime career.A top level panel of key stakeholders will discuss critical topics and initiatives related to Seafarers during the COVID-19 period and beyond, such as:
An overview of the collaborative interaction among maritime organizations, unions and companies on issues and policies related to seafarers
The impact of technology and the digital revolution
    The development of maritime education
Providing motives to choose a maritime career and making the transition from ship to shore
    Panelists:
    - Guy Platten, Secretary General - International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
    - Stephen Cotton, General Secretary - International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)
    - Capt. Belal Ahmed, Chairman - International Maritime Employers Council (IMEC); Managing Director - Western Shipping Pte Ltd, Singapore

  • Coronavirus, Climate Change & Smart Shipping: Three Maritime Scenarios 2020 - 2050 - Preparing for Changes that are "On the Cards"
    Featuring:
Dr. Martin Stopford, Non-Executive President, Clarksons Research Services, Ltd.
    Overview:
The shipping industry’s preparedness to meet the challenges of climate change and the digital revolution has been patchy and disjointed. The Covid-19 pandemic which has been added to the mix lately might shake up the status quo and be a catalyst for the radical measures needed. This is the first public presentation that elaborates on the White Paper which Dr. Martin Stopford published just recently. He outlines three scenarios for the evolution of the industry during the period 2020-2050, a period during which the maritime industry must rebuild its cargo fleet. The three sets of scenarios cover
    Sea Trade
    Shipbuilding Requirements
    Ship Technology
As Dr. Stopford mentions “We know we cannot predict the future. But we can try to prepare for changes that are clearly “on the cards”. Not preparing can be riskier and more expensive than the “safe” option of doing nothing.” The white paper and presentation can help the industry assess alternative strategies and prepare for the way ahead.
