My first time reading Janice Y. K. Lee and "The Expatriates" begins with the arrival of new expatriates to Hong Kong from various parts of the world, highlighting their diverse backgrounds, professions, and reasons for moving. These expatriates come on flights from cities like New York, London, Jakarta, and Tokyo, bringing with them a mix of emotions- I enjoy discovering contemporary fiction that transports us to parts of the world but very soon I found this book is more than (or less?) that...Anyway you will need to listen to get me. I said it maybe too many times that marriage and motherhood- esque story is not my genre but Lee has a gift for the well-observed generalization- Inside these dark materials lies the sharpness of the Author 's eye for the nuance and clash of culture, class, race and sex is subtle and captivating and very real. So i recommend.
