Fast Company features the detecting duo Jole and Gerda Sloan and was designed to fill in the gaps between the popular Thin Man movies. It was also to test the male lead (Melvin Douglas) to see if he could be a replacement for William Powell as Nick Charles in the Thin Man movies. since Powell had just had serious surgery and it wasn't certain that he could return to the role.

What does a woman from 2014 and murder from 1934 have in common? Read Doorway to Murder and find out. When Olivia sees a man framed in the door to her bedroom hall during a blizzard in 2014.  She at first thinks someone has broken into her house, but suddenly the figure vanishes. Meanwhile, during a 1934 blizzard, a bank president is murdered in the vault. At first, these two things couldn't be further apart, but a strange timewarp will change all that. With an opening reminiscent of the great classic mysteries, this book is a must-read.

I'm wrapping up this year's Juneteenth special in the 1970s with Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo and Clarence Major's Reflex and Bone Structure. Both these men experimented with detective fiction creating the anti-detective and taking the books into the mystic realm through double consciousness and metaphysics. But like the writers of the past, they used their words as a form of activism, speaking out against the violence and class issues they saw in their times.
