❄️ Winter Tires: Bring them down, inspect them, check tire pressure, and deal with any slow leaks while you have time.

💨 Filters: Engine air, cabin air, fuel filters-when was the last time they were checked or replaced?

💧 Wiper washer fluid: Still running summer fluid? Get the proper winter-rated fluid in before the first hard freeze.

It's called a heater core-but there's nothing "little" about the job of replacing one.

As we continue our Cooling System Revival, we're getting right into the core of things: the heater core.

What exactly is a heater core? What does it look like? Where is it hiding? How does it work? And why can something that looks like a tiny radiator turn into a major repair bill?

The heater core is part of your vehicle's cooling system, using hot engine coolant to provide heat inside the passenger compartment. But when it becomes restricted with rust, sludge or deposits, you may lose heat - or lose coolant altogether.

And here's the ugly part: getting to the heater core.

On many vehicles' the heater box is buried deep behind the dashboard. The car may have been assembled around that heater box, meaning access can involve removing the seats, centre console, carpet, dashboard and a whole lot of hardware just to reach the part.

I share the story of a Dodge Spirit that needed a heater core replacement. The job took nearly eight hours - I explain why I told the owner not to come looking over my shoulder while I was doing it. Some jobs require absolute focus!

And if you think eight hours of labour sounds expensive, wait until you multiply that by today's shop rates. You might want to check your underwear drawer before you hear the final number.😂

We'll also talk about why attempting to flush a badly plugged heater core isn't always successful, and why sometimes replacement is the only real solution.

Another nugget in the Cooling System Revival, because knowing how your cooling system works before it fails can save you some serious money.

📝 The water pump is the driving forcer behind your vehicle's cooling system. It keeps coolant moving continuously, maintains proper flow and pressure, and helps the entire system do its job.

But here's the catch: the water pump can't overcome a cooling - system component that has already failed. A restricted radiator, faulty thermostat, clogged passage, or another problem upstream can prevent the system from doing its job-even when the water pump itself is working properly.

Cooling System Revival continues-one nugget at a time!

This morning, Motormouth puts the spotlight on one of the most overlooked components in your cooling system : the thermostat, or as I call it, the Temperature Navigator.

It's job is simple but critical-help keep your engine operating at its proper temperature by regulating coolant flow. On many modern engines, normal operating temperature is around 195F, but that little thermostat is certainly not lifetime component.

So what does "lifetime" actually mean when somebody sells you a maintenance-free part?

Would you trust a "lifetime" maintenance-free claim on an 18-wheeler, aircraft, helicopter-or any other machine where failure could have serious consequences?

Neither would I.

And when a thermostat fails an engine overheats, today's aluminum-heavy engines can be especially unforgiving. excessive heat can lead to warped components, head-gasket fsailure and potentially catastrophic engine damage.

Thermostat may be small, but its job is HUGE.

Your radiator doesn't just keep the engine cool - it protects the engine, transmission, and your wallet. But how old is the radiator in your car, how much longer can you realistically expect it to lat?

In today's Motormouth Morning Drive, we breakdown the purpose of the radiator and leave you with three questions every vehicle owner should be asking :

1) How old is your radiator, and How many kilometers has it see?

2) How much longer can you expect it to last?

3) What happens when it fails?

And don't rely on that temperature gauage to warn you. By the time the needle tells you there's s serious problem, the damage may be already underway.

The 1997 Jeep TJ Wrangler provides a perfect example of what can happen when cooling-system failure goes catastrophic : engine damage, premature engine fasilure, and potentially transmission damage.

The good news? Cooling - system problems can often be prevented before they become catastrophic. Know your radiator, know it's age, and know what you're asking it to do.

It's Fun Friday on the Motormouth Morning Drive, and today we're doing a little priming of the pump before heading into the weekend.

Fall is coming, schedules are changing, and we're continuing our "one nugget at a time" approach to vehicle maintenance.

Question#1: We're getting ready to begin a new series around a 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet, and there's plenty of mechanical work ahead: oil leaks, shocks, brakes, fuel filter, tune-up work, valve cover gasket, and even a driver's - seat linkage that needs attention.

Question#2: Why would a vehicle manufacturer's representative describe the maintenance information provided to consumers as a "suggestion"?

Why that particular word?
