Your Vehicle's Anti-Lock Braking System is an important safety system-but it isn't magic, and it can only do its job properly when the rest of the braking system is working as it should.

This morning, Motormouth explains what ABS does, wha tit feels like when it activates, and why every driver should understand that sensation before they actually need it in an emergency. When ABS engages, the pedal can pulse, vibrate and make noises that may feel completely wrong if you've never experienced them before. Knowing what to expect can keep you from releasing the brake pedal when you need maximum braking.

Motormouth also talks about getting familiar with your own vehicle's ABS system. Find a reputable instructional video that demonstrates how your particular system works, and when conditions are safe-such as an empty, snow-covered parking lot-learn what ABS activation actually feels like while maintaining proper control of the vehicle.

The goal isn't to scare drivers. It's to take away the surprise. Know your braking system, know your ABS, know what your vehicle is telling you, and understand the driver's role when things go wrong.

ABS can be an incredible safety net when things go sideways-but it can't overcome a brake system that isn't working properly.

Today we continue our conversation about ABS braking systems and the part the driver plays when ABS activates. Do you know what your vehicle feels like and sounds like when the ABS kicks in? More importantly, do you know what you're supposed to do when it happens?

Your ABS control unit depends on the entire braking system being in good working order: clean hydraulic fluid, sound brake lines, properly functioning brakes at all four wheels, and properly adjusted rear brakes. And yes, that emergency /parking brake has an important job when it comes to keeping those rear brakes properly adjusted.

Too many drivers simply know, "My vehicle has ABS." That's where the education needs to begin.

Tomorrow, I'll tell you how ABS helped save the 2007 FJ Cruiser from being seriously damaged when an unexpected road situation unfolded. These things happen fast-and being prepared can make all the difference.

A brake line doesn't have to look completely rotten to become dangerous. In this episode, Motormouth explains why continuous inspection of steel brake lines needs to be part of every vehicle service - especially around the brackets and fasteners that secure the lines to the vehicle's underbody.

Those little rusty "carbuncles" around a brake - line retaining bracket can be telling you something important. And when a steel line finally ruptures, the brake pedal can go straight to the floor because hydraulic pressure is gone.

Motormouth shares a real - world February experience in rural Pendleton, New York, when a brake pedal suddenly went to the floor approaching a sharp, icy corner - and explains what happened next and why knowing your vehicle's emergency braking systems matters.

The bigger lesson is simple: don't wait for a brake line to fail before you inspect it. Ask your repair shop to inspect and report on all the metal brake lines every time the vehicle is serviced. If corrosion is progressing, deal with it before you need those brakes in an emergency.

A little prevention today can prevent a very bad day tomorrow.

A brake pedal that suddenly goes to the floor is not something you want to discover in traffic.

In this episode, Motormouth explains what can happen when you lose brake pressure, what you should do if the pedal suddenly drops, and - more importantly - why brake maintenance cannot stop with the last brake job.

Brake lines, fluid, hydraulic components, calipers, wheel cylinders, hoses and the master cylinder all need inspection and service between brake jobs. Corrosion, leaks and worn components can develop long before the brake pads or shoes are due again.

This isn't about scaring you - it's about prompting you to check your brakes before they give you a reason to panic. Find the weak spot in the shop instead of discovering it when a brake line ruptures and you suddenly have a pedal on the floor, an unexpected meeting with the vehicle ahead of you....and possibly a new friend arriving from behind.

Know your brakes. Inspect them. Service them. Don't wait for failure to tell you something is wrong.
