What do your shocks and MacPherson Struts actually do, and why do they matter so much as w head into the fall winter driving season.

This morning on Motormouth's Morning Drive , we're busting common suspension myths and explaining how shock absorbers, MacPherson struts, and springs work together to control spring oscillations and maintain tire contact with the road.

Your springs support the vehicle and absorb bumps. Your shocks control the Springs' continued bouncing. A MacPherson Strut combines a structural suspension component with a shock absorber in one assembly. each component has a job, and they must work together properly.

So what happens when shocks or struts wear out? Why can your vehicle feel unstable over bumps, pitch excessively, or lose consistent tire contact with the road? And why should you care before wet roads, cold temperatures, and winter driving arrive?

We'll break down what these components do, how they work, what happens when they fail, and what you should understand as a vehicle owner.

It's Fun Friday at the Car Connection Motormouth Workshop, and we've got FIVE things to ponder, plus a bonus tip that'll make you wonder what some drivers are thinking!

Cold weather has a nasty habit of exposing neglected maintenance. The time to preapre is BEFORE the temperature drops, not when you're standing i na frozen parking lot wondering why your vehicle won't cooperate!

Here's what's on the workbench today:

1) Do your wipers suck? If you can't see clearly, you can't drive safely. Check those bleades before winter weather turns your windshield into a visibility nightmare.

2) How are your fluids doing really? Coolant, oil and other vital fluids deserve attention before the cold asrrives. Winter will expose weaknesses you didn't know you had.

3) Does your vehicle have an external fuel filter? If it does, find out what your manufacturers maintenance schedule says. Don't assume every vehicle has a serviceable external filter.

4) What's in your washer -fluid jug? Minus 40℃? Don't gamble with a mixture that freezes when you need it most. Here at the workshop, we don't do halfway measures!

5) Have you protected your door seals? Silicone protection can help prevent frozen seals from sticking. A little preparation beats trying to pry open your vehicle after an overnight freeze!

BONU TIP: WINTER TIRES

Still trusting those three-season tires to carry you through another Canadian winter? Your tires are your connection to the road. When temperatures drop and conditions deteriorate, proper winter tires can make a real difference in traction, control and stopping performance.

Remember: winter preparation isn't something you do AFTER the first snowstorm. It's something you do before Mother Nature decides to test your judgment!

Shocks and Struts aren't there just for comfort-they have a critical job to do.

In today's Suspension & Steering: One Nugget at a Time, Motormouth breaks down what shocks and struts actually do and why they're so important to vehicle stability and control.

Whether your vehicle has MacPherson Struts, conventional shocks and coil springs, coil-over assemblies, or a combination of suspension designs, the principle is the same: the suspension has to control the movement of the vehicle while keeping the tires properly planted on the road.

When shocks or struts are worn, the suspension can continue bouncing and oscillating instead of settling down. That can reduce tire contact, compromise braking and steering response, increase body movement, and make an emergency left-right maneuver much harder to control.

It's not about making your ride feel softy or comfortable.

It's about controlling the suspension so the tires can do their job.

And when you suddenly have to avoid something in the road, that tire contact can be the difference between maintaining control and finding yourself in a sideways skid-and heading for the rhubarb.

Today we look at the purpose of shicks and struts, how different suspension designs use them, and why they deserve to be part of your regular vehicle inspection and maintenance routine.

Mileage doesn't matter.

Maintenance matters.

Your brakes are only part of the equation when it comes to controlling a vehicle.

As we continue our Fall-winter Vehicle Maintenance-One Nugget at a Time, we're moving into suspension and steering and why the entire system must work together with a properly performing brake system.

From the front of the vehicle to the rear, every component has a job in keeping the vehicle stable, predictable and planted on the roadway. Steering components, suspension components, wheel alignment, tires and braking systems all have to work in harmony-especially when you suddenly need to make an invasive maneuver because somebody else just pulled a maroon maneuver.

The goal isn't simply to make a vehicle ride nicely. It's to create a vehicle that responds properly when you need it most, helping you avoid becoming part of somebody else's nightmare.

Time to beat the drum, friends🥁 Drum brakes may be simple in design, but they can get complicated when maintenance gets ignored. And yes- there are still plenty of vehicles on the road using rear drum brakes, either on their own or as part of a disc/drum braking system.

NOTE: drum brakes require a manual adjustment performed by your auto service technician.

Today we're talking about drum barake service, maintenance and repairs, including why rear drum brakes need proper adjustment and why your parking brake/emergency brake needs to be used regularly.

One important lesson from the shop and the classroom: drum brakes don't magically maintain themselves. That technician still has an important job to do. We'll wrap up our brake-system series with this episode, then we're moving into Fall/Winter Vehicle Maintenance-One Nugget at a Time.
