Brake calipers are a major player in how your vehicle stops - and just because you press the brake pedal and the car slows down doesn't mean the entire braking system is working properly.

Today on Dems the Brakes, we finish up the parking-brake discussion and talk about the habit change that needs to happen before an unused parking brake can safely become part of your routine.

Then we get into brake calipers and what can happen when a piston binds, caliper hardware seizes, or brake pads bind in the caliper saddle. A caliper that isn't doing its job can affect how evenly your vehicle brakes at all four wheels.

That matters even more when driving conditions change to wet, slippery, icy and black-ice roads. Your brakes need to be doing their job before you discover a problem when you need the most.

Your parking brake isn't just there for parking - and your rear brakes aren't supposed to sit around looking pretty.

In today's Parking Brake Debrief, Motormouth takes another run at the subject because sometimes we're listening to the words but we're not actually hearing the message.

The parking brake needs to work, and it needs to be used. More importantly, the rear brakes need to be serviced so they can actually do their share of the braking.

When the rear brakes aren't working properly, the front brakes end up carrying far more of the load than they were designed to handle. That means increased front -brake wear, more heat, overheated rotors, brake pulsation and, ultimately, more money coming out of your pocket.

And here's the part that gets misunderstood: servicing the rear brakes doesn't automatically mean doing another brake job.

Sometimes it means taking the calipers off, removing and cleaning the slide pins, cleaning and lubricating the hardware, removing the pads, cleaning the pad saddles and putting everything back together so the brakes can actually move feely and do their job.

Skippy got a perfect real-world reaction when she explained this to her brother- in- law: "You're listening, but you're not hearing." Once he understood what was actually involved, his response was simple: "Oh, I didn't know that's what you meant."

That's exactly why we're doing this debrief.

We're talking about the Why, the how and the dollars and cents behind keeping the entire braking system working properly-not waiting until something is worn out, overheated or broken.

Your brakes are a system. Making every part of that system earn its keep.

Is your parking brake just there for emergencies? Nope. And that little "P" on the automatic transmission isn't a substitute for using it.

Today we're putting the parking brake myth to bed and explaining why use your parking brake every time you park is an important part of proper vehicle operation. We look at what actually holds the vehicle when it's in Park, why you don't want the entire weight of the vehicle -whether you're parked uphill or downhill-and how using the parking brake properly helps transfer that load where it belongs.

There's another important piece to this : the rear brakes> On many vehicles, regularly applying the parking brake helps keep the rear parking - brake mechanism operating properly. Neglect it long enough and you can end up with rear brake components that aren't doing their share of the work, while the front brakes take more of the beating.

That can mean premature front - brake wear - and another repair bill that could have been avoided with a simple habit.

So, gentlemen and ladies, when somebody says, "Honey, It's an automatic. we don't need the parking brake," we're going to respectfully dismantle that myth.

No hate mail required.😂 Just good vehcile knowledge, proper maintenance, and understanding why your car is designed the way it is.

Allison asks: My engine oil needs topping up between oil changes-is that norma? We look at oil consumption in today's high - revving engines and where "normal" ends and a problem begins.

Dianne is finding dark engine oil underneath her vehicle. What could that leak mean, and what could that leak mean, and what can happen when petroleum - based fluids reach hot engine components or exhaust systems? A small leak can become a very expensive problem - and vehicle fires can have serious consequences.

April: Asks how often should we change our vehicle fluids? Manufacturer recommendations are a starting point, but if you own the vehicle and want it to last, regular fluid changes are part of being the care giver.

Mileage doesn't matter. Maintenance matters. You can't save money by neglecting the fluids that protect the expensive parts.

What exactly is a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection (MPVI), and why should you care about it ?

Brake calipers matter - and their condition can make the difference between a properly functioning brake system and one that creates problems down the road.

This morning , Motormouth takes a close look at brake calipers: what they do, what needs to be inspected, what tells us a caliper can be cleaned, serviced and reused, and the warning signs that mean it's time to replace it.

A caliper may look perfectly fine from the outside while problems are developing where you can't see them. We'll talk about corrosion, piston operation, slides, mounting surfaces and the things that need to be checked before simply putting an old caliper back into service.

And Monday, we'll continue the brake discussion with the parking brake- because contrary to what some people may say, having an automatic transmission does not make the parking brake unnecessary. Proper parking - brake operation is part of masking sure the rear brakes are functioning and adjusted as the manufacturer intended.

Your brake system is far more than pads, rotors, and calipers. Today we're continuing our look at the hydraulic side of the braking system, focusing on the pressure differential valve and the critical job it performs when you put your foot on the brake pedal.

We're talking about how hydraulic pressure is distributed through the system, why the rear brakes need to begin doing their job as the vehicle's weight transfers forward, and what can happen when that system doesn't operate properly.

And we're also talking about something the "maintenance - free" crowd doesn't always want to discuss: brake fluid doesn't last forever.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Years of heating and cooling can contaminate the fluid and contribute to corrosion and problems throughout the hydraulic system. That's why I recommend flushing the brake system every 24 months rather than believing in some mysterious "lifetime" fluid.

We've covered the brake booster, master cylinder, brake lines and hydraulic components, and we're still working our way toward the mechanical side of the system.

The bottom line hasn't changed: That vehicle is your money. You bought it. Now take charge of maintaining it.

Because if you can't stop or steer it, let me tell you something - nothing else is going to matter.

Turn the radio up and scream - you're going into the rhubarb! 🌿😂
