Cardinals Underground

The Cardinals have a roster. Sounded like a good idea for Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban, and Dani Sureck to talk about it. Our beloved trio chat about the Bam Knight surprise, Walter Nolen’s PUP, Josh Fryar making his roster push (and the high school highlights of Darnell Dockett and Derrick Henry), Xavier Thomas’ big play to stay, all those defensive backs on the roster, Will Hernandez being ready to practice and his potential role, Clayton Tune’s future, Getting Cultured (including a certain NFL engagement), what Trey Benson/Dante Stills/Mack Wilson Sr. have in common, and a nearly forgotten Winning Behavior.

The mustache of Paul Calvisi is in its final hours, but it helps Paulie Podcast through one more episode with Dani Sureck and Darren Urban. The quartet discusses what happened in Denver, what players stood out in the game and the joint practice, how the inside linebacker battle remains hot and heavy behind Mack Wilson Sr., Paul’s potential name change, what young offensive linemen could be in the mix, Josh Sweat impacting the pass rush, the back end of the safety room, Paul’s intriguing lists, Dani getting everyone cultured (6,000 new words in the dictionary?!?), the strong tight end room, there’s a deep drive for Winning Behavior, and Paul trying out some new money-making ideas.

Is Paul a kingpin? He probably won’t bowl you over with his answer. But he, Darren Urban, and Dani Sureck do have points to make about the Cardinals opening the preseason. The trio talks about Kyler’s first preseason game since 2021, that interception everyone was talking about, the point of getting a feel of live action in the preseason, Murray “enjoying” himself, the meaning of MHJ and McBride’s catches, Trey Benson with young David Johnson vibes, the joint practice in Denver, a preseason version of Wise Guy, Will Hernandez’s return, improving in short yardage, A.Q. Shipley’s radio debut and Winning Behavior from Pat Murphy, Demi and Joe.

One more episode out at State Farm Stadium before camp breaks, and it’s all leading into the first game of the preseason. That means Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck have plenty to discuss, including the first depth chart, James Conner and Trey Benson and the idea of co-RB1s, what could/might/should be done with wide receiver depth, a timely Getting Cultured segment, the outer-space ceiling of Paris Johnson Jr., the timeline on BJ Ojulari, Will Johnson’s Winning Behavior, and where Kyler is ranked among the NFC West QBs.

We can’t help it if Paul Calvisi can’t handle melting a marshmallow, although we can put it on TV. We can also let Paul join Darren Urban and Dani Sureck as the trio talk straight from State Farm Stadium about a week of training camp, including the first padded practice of the season. Among the topics: the snaps doled out at inside linebacker, how the Starling Thomas V injury impacts the cornerbacks, Hjalte Froholdt’s ascension, A.Q. Shipley as Cardinals’ new color analyst, Paul’s breakout players (they might surprise you), Getting Cultured with Dani (without the intro, alas), and Winning Behavior, along with Trey McBride and a  strong tight end room, MHJ impressions, and what they want to see before the first preseason game.

As the players report to training camp, Paul Calvisi comes prepared with his annual mustache, which may or may not make it a week. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have a month to show they are worthy of the 2025 roster, and Darren Urban and Dani Sureck join Paul to talk the heavy competition that should come in Year 3 of J.G. Also on the topic list: Paul’s hot take bubble, Jonah Williams’ health, the fate of right guard, Will Johnson’s immediate impact after signing, the players most worth watching at camp, Josh Sweat’s trajectory, Winning Behavior (iconic movie props and canoodling), as well as a farewell to Tyrann Mathieu, a great Cardinals draft pick.

As training camp creeps closer – a week away! – Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck will soon have lots to opine about. But before that, for a final time, we go the speculation route as our trio break down their predictions in each of three categories: a player prediction, a game prediction, and a statistical prediction. What are the parameters? Well, there aren’t many guardrails, so the talent has a lot of room to roam. We hear about Michael Wilson, Josh Sweat and Kyler Murray, and as for the rest … you just gotta listen.

Social media has infiltrated our lives, but it wasn’t always that way. Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck go round robin to discuss, from the time the Cardinals moved to Arizona in 1988 to the emergence of social media around 2010, what non-football events, what non-sports events, and what Cardinals events in that time period would have been interesting to see play out on social media in real time. The Cardinals moments are all memorable anyway, but some of them could’ve been bonkers at the time.

As our country’s birthday arrives, Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck talk about what freedoms the Cardinals might have this season and how that could impact the season. How much freedom will DC Nick Rallis have in rushing four to get to the quarterback? How much freedom will Kyler Murray have to run the ball – or what freedom will Drew Petzing have to call some plays. The trio also discuss how free the Cardinals will be to exercise a deep passing game, and what will be the look at cornerback or will the Cardinals be free to sign a vet?

Have questions before training camp? The Cardinals Underground crew has answers. Paul Calvisi, Dani Sureck, and Zach Gershman (filling in for the vacationing Darren Urban) discuss key topics like cornerback depth, the inside linebacker battle, Isaiah Adams' chances at right guard, Kyler Murray’s prime, expectations for edge rusher Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell’s return and Trey McBride’s involvement in Tight End University. Plus, we save time for Getting Cultured with Dani, Paul’s Power Poll of Ineptitude, and a few examples of winning—and not-so-winning—behavior.
