Career and Job transition – The Mentors Radio episodes

  • 325. TV News Pioneer Peggy Stanton on her career, journalism and more

In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with Peggy Stanton, ABC-TV’s first woman news correspondent in Washington D.C., about her pioneering journey into journalism at a time when very few women were in the field. What attracted her to a career in journalism? Peggy shares some highlights of her experiences as an ABC news correspondent in D.C. and more. She also talks about principles of good journalism. Her storied world experiences include politicians and celebrities such as Lyndon Johnson, Fidel Castro, Julia Andrews, Saint Pope John Paul II, Salvador Dali and more. Focused on career, she did not anticipate marrying a Congressman along the way, whose career segued to international business. You’ll also learn about Peggy’s very unexpected life-changing experience in a former communist bloc country, in a small town called Medjugorje which she visited with her daughter, at her daughter’s urging.

A compelling writer, Stanton recently penned a book (From the White House to the White Cross) about her career and experiences that many have praised as “you can’t put it down!” (see below)

In today’s episode of The Mentors Radio Host Dan Hesse talks with Jack Swarbrick, Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame (UND), about his unlikely—and unexpected—transition from a 28-year career with the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels (he was made partner in 1987), to become UND’s 12th Athletics Director in 2008. He’s now in his 15th year as the James E. Rohr Director of Athletics (AD) at Univ. of Notre Dame.

Because of his wide-ranging experience in the business of, and governance of, athletics through representing organizations such as the NCAA and the US Olympic committee as a successful lawyer before becoming an athletic director, Jack is particularly influential in matters impacting college athletics. His on-the-field performance is impressive. During his tenure as Athletic Director:

                • Nine Notre Dame teams have won NCAA national championships
                • 11 teams have been runners-up
                • Notre Dame men have won two Capital One Cups given annually to the NCAA’s best overall Division I mens athletic program
                • Born in Yonkers, NY, and raised in Yonkers and Bloomington, IN, Swarbrick is a 1976 magna cum laude graduate of Notre Dame, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Upon graduating from Stanford University Law School in 1980, he accepted a position as an associate in the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels. He and his wife, Kimberly, have four now-grown children and a growing number of grandchildren.

In this episode, you’ll learn how Swarbrick’s career took a surprising and successful turn; life-changing advice he’s taken to heart along the way; and the importance of good character, good leadership, loving what you do, and staying open to opportunities!

Jack and Dan discuss new initiatives in college athletics, how to mentor and develop character, and how to choose the right leader for any position—critical skills both in athletics and in business.

An outspoken critic of recent changes in college sports — including “Name, Image and Likeness” of student athletes, and the “Transfer Portal” — Jack discusses with Dan how these money-driven programs can reduce a University’s ability to genuinely mentor students and, most importantly, to develop character. They also discuss Jack’s call for the NFL and NBA to allow 18-year olds to pursue a professional path after high school, instead of attending college, in order to avoid collegiate athletics becoming little more than the minor leagues. You’ll also learn about Jack’s mentors and more!

In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Dan Hesse talks with guest mentor Paul Hobbs, dubbed “The Steve Jobs of Wine” by Forbes magazine. A third generation farmer, raised in upstate New York, Paul wanted nothing to do with farming as a teen and decided to follow his great-grandfather and pursue a career in medicine. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry at Notre Dame (UND) and was accepted into medical school. That’s the point at which mentors intervened, including his father, ultimately encouraging him to pursue a different path. Their advice made sense to Paul and he moved to California, graduating from University of Davis three years later with a Masters of Science in Viticulture and Enology. His winemaking adventure had begun. (see his BIO below for more details.)

Paul never looked back… He has enjoyed, and continues to enjoy, the journey—all of it—tremendously.

In this episode, you’ll learn how Paul Hobbs, now celebrating more than 30 years in the wine business, became the go-to wine consultant to 100 wineries, and how he built his own empire of eight wineries on four continents (so far)! You’ll learn his “why,” his passion, and why he loves doing what he does, even during the challenges. He’s happy…and by example, he models a path, and principles, to help you find your happiness too!

In today’s episode, The Mentors Host Tom Loarie talks with William D. Cohan, a business writer, former investor banker, and best-selling author of “Power Failure: The Rise and Fall of an American Icon,” which chronicles the strengths and weaknesses of influentical General Electric CEOs Jack Welch and Jeff Immelt, and the the rise and fall of General Electric (GE) over 36 years. The lessons learned are legendary in their impact on anyone’s business—large, mid-sized or small—and legendary in understanding what to really look for when evaluating whether (or not) your or another business is one in which it could be worth investing. Ethics play a role for sure.

At its peak, GE was an industrial empire worth nearly $600 billion. For almost a century its logo branded “just about everything, from wind turbines to submarine detectors, fridges, televisions, toasters and lightbulbs,” as a Nov 2022 article in The Guardian described.

In 2001, GE was considered to be one of the most valuable companies in the world, boasting a rare, triple-A credit score. A mere 20 years later, GE announced it would be broken up into smaller fragments. Its employees numbered less than half those of 20 years earlier. In the 2000s, the company had begun sourcing its lightbulbs from Chinese contractors and branding them as GE products. In 2020, GE sold off it’s lighting business for good. What went so wrong? Find out in this episode of THE Mentors RADIO.
