  • John Sitomer and the South Florida’s Council of Dads he founded Mentor Kids and Lead by Example

You want inspiration? John Sitomer delivers in spades! As he puts it, “I spent one third of my life battling cancer. I’m thrilled it was me!” Today on THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with John Sitomer, a fitness entrepreneur, a dad, and the founder of South Florida’s Council of Dads.

For John, battling cancer has made him a better person and led him to discover his calling in life, namely, to mentor boys and girls who need a positive parental influence. You see, during John’s second bout with cancer, he didn’t know if he was going to make it or not. A friend gave him a book that ultimately changed his life, but he couldn’t even open the book or turn a page until about 10 months after he received it! As you listen to the show, you’ll hear the whole story and it’s a WOW! that’ll certainly spark ideas and inspiration for YOU, wherever you are, in whatever business you’re in, in whatever situation you face.

John talks about “brotherhood” vs. “friendship,” about “Pay it Forward” vs. being a victim, and about the blessings of seeing inner-city kids being transformed into confident, positive, givers. He talks about the men who told told him they’d been waiting a lifetime for something like this (South Florida’s Council of Dads) where they can give! And… John talks about having NO fear!

The book John received, by the way, is The Council of Dads, written by another dad, Bruce Feiler, who had faced a similar situation as he also had battled cancer. You can find it listed in our Show Notes below.

  • A Rare Treat: All Three Original Hosts of The Mentors Radio share their first-hand learnings and their passion for helping others succeed

In this episode, executive producer Karen Walker interviews the original three hosts of The Mentors Radio—Tom Loarie, Ric Brutocao and John Phillips. Each is a highly sought-after, successful CEO of their own companies, in three very different industries. That said, they each share a passion and history of highest ethics throughout their careers and a passion for helping others succeed.

The Mentors Radio original hosts: L to R, Ric Brutocao, John Phillips and Tom Loarie

Tom Loarie began work as a brick layer to earn money while in school but he is most known for a stellar career in the life sciences field, as a start-up CEO for a number of companies, some of whose medical devices have saved lives and reversed the course of serious disease. He is currently the start-up CEO of Silicon Valley-based Bryologyx, developing a new class of drugs to enhance the response rates and treatment durability of cancer immunotherapies.

Ric Brutocao hails primarily from the tech arena, ultimately launching and eventually selling his own company. He also has served as a remarkable CEO, President and Executive leader in a number of other companies including the international luxury appliance company DACOR, at least one winery, an Italy-based yacht company and too many others to list. The founder of DACOR once noted that “Ric is the best operational manager I’ve ever seen.” Ric currently serves as managing partner of Laguna Hills, CA-based Venture Financial Partners.

John Phillips, Jr. co-founded with his wife, Mary, what has become one of the largest stained glass companies in the world, Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser® Stained Glass Studio. He grew up in the industry, often accompanying his father on stained glass sales or follow-up visits. Then he worked in the industry, learning all aspects of the craft and business. By the time he and his wife launched their own stained glass company, John was already a sought-after industry expert. But he added a fresh, new level of technology and automation that enabled them to deliver superior customer experience and a superior satisfaction guarantee. People noticed. The quality of their craftsmanship, the superb customer communications, employee training and efficient problem-solving quickly set their company apart from others. And, John remained a go-to friend, helper and advisor in the facility management, stained glass and related industries when peers sought help. His drive for excellence paid off. Within 15 short years of launching their business, one of the largest legacy stained glass firms in the country—over 100 years old—invited John to consider acquiring their company. The rest is history. Now John and Mary own and run Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser® Stained Glass Studio.

In this episode of The Mentors Radio, you’ll get first-hand, real-world insights into how to run a successful business, regardless of industry or experience. It’s raw and real and a lot of fun to learn from these three Master Mentors!

  • Learn from Award-winning Changemaker Joseph “Doc” Marshall, PhD: How he succeeds in helping at-risk youth Stay Alive and Free

You might think you can’t learn life-changing business success principles from a seasoned teacher who spent much of his life helping at-risk youth succeed in every way—from school to happiness to forging their own strong families to careers—but you’d be wrong! You can learn a TON from this award-winning changemaker, Dr. Joseph Marshall, and The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie in today’s engaging and inspiring episode. “Doc” Marshall delivers down-to-earth, first-hand, real-world tips and advice for success in life and work.

MacArthur Genius Award-winner Joseph Marshall, Ph.D., is an author, lecturer, radio talk show host and most importantly, a former math teacher and administrator with the San Francisco Unified School District and a long-time community anti-violence activist.

As a public school teacher, he grew sick and tired of watching his most promising students fall prey to the lure of gangs, drugs, and crime, and end up either dead or in prison.  Finding that neither the justice nor school system seemed willing even to try to address the underlying problems–to give the kids the kind of information and assistance they really needed–he leapfrogged right over the system and co-founded the Omega Boys Club, based upon the belief that young people of the inner city want a way out of the life they’re in, but just don’t know how to get out.  Since the club’s inception in 1987, with a handful of kids in a community center basement, he and his small army of street soldiers have already helped 600 kids out of gang-banging and drug-dealing, and pushed, tutored, driven and even funded 140 inner-city kids into colleges around the country.

He’s the co-founder and executive director of Stay Alive and Free, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping at-risk youth alive and free, unharmed by violence and free from incarceration. Dr. Marshall has won MANY MANY awards for his successful leadership and results, and he continues to win awards. He also founded the Street Soldiers National Consortium, a group of activists dedicated to preventing violence nationwide, and co-founded the Omega Boys Club.

Dr. Marshall’s life-transforming, proven principles of success lie in treating violence as any doctor would treat a disease. And these principles transfer to anyone’s life and business, no matter what age, and no matter where you are in the growth and learning curve!
