  • Tuesday all night Rocksteady Music with Alphanso Castro Teanage Dance Party King
Rocksteady is a music genre that originated in Jamaica around 1966. A successor of ska and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, The Maytals, The Heptones and The Paragons. The term rocksteady comes from a dance style that was mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rock Steady". Dances performed to rocksteady were less energetic than the earlier ska dances. The first international rocksteady hit was "Hold Me Tight" (1968) by the American soul singer Johnny Nash; it reached number one in Canada. Drums tend to keep 4/4 time, but the 3rd beat of each 4-triplet phrase is accented by the bass drum and snare. Ska incorporates elements of traditional mento and calypso music, alongside American Jazz and R&B.One of the most important names in Ska historyis Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. Dodd was a DJ, rather than an artist, but it was he is largely responsible for the spread and popularity of the first wave of Ska across Jamaica. He identified the country’s need for national pride and cultural identity in the days surrounding its gaining independence. He setup Studio One, which is the – now legendary – recording studio in which many of the first ska tracks were laid down. After only a decade, Ska gave way to the emerging genres of Rocksteady and Reggae, whichwere characterised by slower songs with more socio-political themes. The second wave of Ska took off in the UKint the 1970s. This wave of Ska was known as 2-tone and the overarching message that proliferated in the lyrics of songs was one of unity. Bands, including Madness and The Specials, were typically made up of members from Caucasian and African races. The music itself featured melodies and rhythms that had characterised the first wave of Ska in Jamaica – but with a decidedly punk influence.

  • Live Sports Chat:NFL does not require its athletes stand for the national anthem
The NFL does not require its athletes stand for the national anthem, and, indeed, the 49ers said it was within Kaepernick’s right to not participate. But some coaches say they expect members of their team to stand, regardless of their personal feelings. It’s a delicate line that Rex Ryan, the Buffalo Bills head coach, addressed in a Sunday news conference:
Twenty years ago, the NBA suspended a player who refused to stand for the national anthem. The NFL will not be doing the same thing.
“Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the National Anthem,” the NFL said in a statement issued Saturday, in response to the controversy that emerged when 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick opted not to stand during the playing of the national anthem on Friday night in Santa Clara, prior to a game against the Packers.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick has since said. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
The NBA based its suspension of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf on a rule that requires players to stand during the playing of the national anthem. The NFL has no such rule, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement is silent on the subject.
And so Kaepernick and any other player has the right to not stand during the national anthem. Whether other players will follow Kaepernick’s lead remains to be seen.

A new book contradicts what our grade school textbooks have included for ages and could change the way history is written about the Western Hemisphere. In “The First Americans Were Africans” (published by AuthorHouse), author and academic Dr. David Imhotep is bringing forth decades of research and evidence to present readers a comprehensive look into the history and identity of the first Americans. Asserting that Africans were the first Americans and that they arrived 51,000 years prior to the Mongolians, Imhotep illustrates a date that is four times earlier than what is largely referenced.
“Africans not only came before Columbus, but were in the Americas long before any other group, at least 56,000 years ago,” says Dr. Imhotep. “With this book, I produce and expand on evidence from several scientific fields, credible scholars, professors and researchers.”
Imhotep’s extensive research and gathering of evidence is in part a product of his academic training, university-level teaching and extensive world travel. One of the first people to hold a Ph.D. with a specialization in ancient African history, Imhotep credits the creation of his book with helping to life what he calls the “veil of secrecy” over American history. He can be emailed at [email protected]

  • Sir Alexander Bustamante contribution to Jamaica and why he is a National Hero
William Alexander Bustamante (1884-1977) was a Jamaican labor leader who became Jamaica's first chief minister under limited self-government and the first prime minister after independence in 1962.William Alexander Bustamante, perhaps Jamaica's most flamboyant and charismatic politician, was born William Alexander Clarke on February 24, 1884. His father, Robert Constantine Clarke, a member of the declining white plantocracy, was the overseer of a small, mixed-crop plantation called Blenheim, in the parish of Hanover on the then-isolated northwestern coast of the island. By virtue of the second marriage of Elsie Hunter, his paternal grandmother, to Alexander Shearer, he became distantly related to both Norman Washington Manley and Michael Manley, as well as to Hugh Shearer. After his return to Jamaica, Bustamante established himself as a money-lender in modest offices on Duke Street, then the desired cachet for all business addresses in Kingston. He installed Gladys Longbridge as his private secretary, and she was to accompany him for the rest of his life as confidante, assistant, companion, and, finally, after September 6, 1962, his second wife. Bustamante described himself as a dietician and businessman with North American experience, but while he might have returned with some wealth to the island, his formal training and experience were mostly his own fantastic fabrication.
