On today’s show, I’m joined by Dr. Laura Harrison, a Senior Cultural Resources Advisor at Historic Environment Scotland — a non-departmental public body in Scotland that cares for and promotes Scotland’s historic environment. While earning her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Harrison conducted research on the Declaration of Arbroath and the names it has been known by over the years.
In her 2017 essay, “That Famous Manifesto: The Declaration of Arbroath, Declaration of Independence, and the Power of Language,” she expanded on her research into the naming practices of the Declaration of Arbroath, and also investigated some of the possible reasons that the Declaration of Arbroath and the American Declaration of Independence are often associated with one another, although no scholarly evidence exists to support the links between the two.
Thanks so much to Dr. Harrison for being on the show, and talking with me about her research. You can read her 2017 paper, “That Famous Manifesto..” by clicking here.

On today’s show, I’m joined by Clan Carmichael member, Adele Harrah. Some of you may already know Adele, as she has been a member of Clan Carmichael USA for over twenty years. During her time at Clan Carmichael USA, she has hosted numerous tents at Highland Games, attended clan gatherings, and when I first met Adele, she was holding things together as the chair of the CCUSA Membership Committee, editor of the Eagle Gate, CCUSA secretary, chair of the Products Committee, and a member of the Clan Carmichael USA Board of Directors.
As a longtime member of Clan Carmichael USA, I was happy when Adele agreed to sit down with me for a few minutes to share some stories and memories of years past at Clan Carmichael USA — and also her advice on hosting clan tents, and how members can get more involved in Clan Carmichael.
This episode was really fun to record, and I’m looking forward to bringing more of Clan Carmichael’s best stories to you when I sit down to talk to other Clan Carmichael members who have been here over the years.

On today’s show, I am joined by director and co-founder of The Reivers Road, Alastair Cunningham to discuss the relatively unknown history of border reiving that took place in the border region of Scotland from the 13th century through the early years of the 17th century.
We also talk about how landowners during those times had to “ride the marches” to ensure their lands had not been encroached upon, and how those riding traditions eventually led to the modern day common riding traditions that are seen during the summer months throughout the Scottish border region.
According to their website, The Reivers Road was created “to temp tourists [in Scotland] away from the most popular destinations” and into the border region of Scotland. To do this, Alastair drew on his 20 years of experience operating Scottish tours and created an app that can be downloaded to provide users a GPS-activated virtual tour guide along six pre-planned routes through the border region of Scotland.

On today’s episode of Carmichael Clan Radio, we’re honored and excited to be joined by Andrew Carmichael, the Younger of Carmichael.
With the first gathering in six years just around the corner, we wanted to have Andrew join the show to talk about Clan Carmichael gatherings, both past and present. For his entire life, Andrew has lived in close proximity to the clan gatherings at Carmichael, so we were happy to have him join us to share some of his fondest memories from past gatherings.
The 2023 clan gathering will mark the 40th year that Chief Richard has organized gatherings at Carmichael. In this episode, Andrew also shares a little about what is planned for the highly anticipated clan gathering this June, and shares a just a small part of what we have to look forward to.

On today’s episode of Carmichael Clan Radio, we’re delighted to be joined by Professor Gerard Carruthers of the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Robert Burns Studies. Dr. Carruthers is the Francis Hutcheson Chair of Scottish Literature, the Founding Director of the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, and the author of multiple books, articles, and other publications.
With Burns Night just around the corner, we wanted to sit down with Dr. Carruthers to talk about Scotland’s national bard — the poet and lyricist Robert Burns. Who was the man that has forever captured Scotland’s heart, and what is it about Burns that makes him unquestionably the most celebrated among Scottish poets?
In the episode, we also examine some of the history and traditions behind Burns Night suppers and celebrations that are held each January 25th in countries around the world. Dr. Carruthers shares with us some of the highlights of a Burns Supper and gives some advice on taking on your first Burns Supper.

On today’s show, I talk with Scottish artist and author Katie Carmichael about her latest project, a book titled My Great-Grandfather, the Alien. The book is a graphic novel tracing her great-grandfather's life from Scotland to New York as an employee of the United Fruit Company. Family legend told the story of Thomas being murdered in New York, but Katie’s research revealed that there might be more to the story.

On today’s show, the Clan Carmichael USA newsletter editor, Leah Hargrove, talks with West Point professor of history and Hundred Years’ War scholar, Dr. Clifford Rogers about the Battle of Baugé of 1421.
This episode features a fascinating discussion about the history of the garter that appears in almost every family and clan crest, an in-depth talk about the Battle of Baugé, and a few other topics related to the history of warfare.
For Carmichaels across the world, the Battle of Baugé is one of the most significant events in our clan history, and is the battle from which we were presented our family crest that depicts a broken spear, symbolizing the de-horsing of the Duke of Clarence -brother to Henry V- by Sir John Carmichael.
