  • Carolyn Talks 'Wild Indian' With Film Critic Shea Vassar

In this new episode of Carolyn Talks…, I speak with Cherokee Nation film critic Shea Vassar, we discuss Wild Indian, the debut feature film of writer-director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr., which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2021.

When Makwa a young Anishinaabe boy kills a classmate and coerces his friend Ted-O to help him bury the body and the truth, their fates are forever changed. This one terrible day creates a ripple effect leading to even more devastating results in their lives as men. Makwa (Michael Greyeyes) is an emotionally repressed business man who struggles to hide his violent tendencies from his wife and co-workers. Ted-O (Chaske Spencer) is former best friend, tries to adjust to life outside of prison, and away from crime. Burdened by the guilt of helping Makwa to cover up his crime, Ted-O find it hard to let go of the past, and is desperate to atone for what he’s done

  • Carolyn Talks Netflix Short Film 'Canvas' With Writer-director Frank E. Abeny III

Carolyn Talks… is back with a new episode, this time with animation artist Frank E. Abney III. In this episode, Carolyn discusses Frank Abney’s new Netflix short film Canvas, which has been a passion project of his for years. Written and directed by Frank, the film is a beautiful illustration of how people experience, grief and how the seemingly simple actions of a child can begin the process of healing.

With it’s clear and beautiful 3D animation that mimics a painting Canvas is a poignant story about Arthur an elderly painter who’s lost his inspiration to create, and see the beauty in his surroundings following the death of his wife. When his young granddaughter Aura and her mother come to visit, Aura’s art and curiosity create a spark within Arthur by reminding him he still has a story to tell and his memories are worth holding onto.

  • So Here's What Happened at Sundance 2021: Carolyn Talks 'Doublespeak' With Writer-Director Hazel McKibbin, and Actress Angela Wong Carbone

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival began its week of screenings and various online events on January 28th, among those screening, is

Doublespeak, an original film entered into Short Films Program. In this episode of Carolyn Talks…, I speak with writer and director Hazel McKibbin, and actress Angela Wong Carbone about their technical and emotional approaches to preparing for and making the film, and finding catharsis through art.

For her first short film writer and director, Hazel McKibbin takes a day in Emma’s life that is a day many others face and scrutinizes the ways the corporate world – or any work environment really – creates an unsafe work environment for employees when the people in charge allow those with seniority to abuse their power by intimidating, harassing and even assaulting their subordinates. She deftly shows the moral and ethical failings that occur when the benefit of the doubt is placed on the antagonizer and places the burden of proof and doubt on the victims.

  • Carolyn Talks The ' Sound of Metal' With Director and Co-writer Darius Marder
For this episode of Carolyn Talks… I had the pleasure of speaking with Darius Marder, director and co-writer of Sound of Metal about how he, his co-writer Abraham Marder, sound editor, and composer Nicholas Becker and their teams created one of the most unique cinematic auditory experiences I’ve ever had. As a viewer, critic, and disabled person experiencing slow hearing loss, it meant so much to have the opportunity to speak with Marder about the great acting by Olivia Cooke, and Paul Raci – whose characters Lou and Joe provide the necessary emotional support, and introduction to the deaf culture for Ruben, and about how sound is used tell a story of loss, acceptance and gaining new perspectives on the way we live in a world filled with noise.
