  • What If The World Wrote Their Own Beatitudes?
Over the weekend, Jeff was in church when the pastor brought up the question of, "what if the world wrote their own beatitudes? What would they look like or say?"

    Here are the results:

Blessed are the entitled, for they grab what they want.
Blessed are the carefree, for they shall be comfortable.
Blessed are the pushy, for they shall win.
Blessed are the greedy, for they shall climb the food chain.
Blessed are the vengeful, for they shall be feared.
Blessed are those who don't get caught, for they shall look good.
Blessed are the argumentative, for they shall get in the last word.
Blessed are the popular, for this world lies at their feet.
When you look at what the world around us values, it looks completely opposite to Jesus and the Gospel doesn't it?

Now, here is what the word of God says are the real Beatitudes from Matthew 5:3-10:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
    Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
    Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
    Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
    Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3-10)

The Gospel of Jesus is more than a few handy tips for improving our lives this week.  It is a new outlook on everything, with a glorious future renewing the creation through his death and resurrection.  But he is not the only one making us promises.  The world has its own version of events, its own eschatology, its own promises of reward.  We must choose.  And either way, we will be living by faith.

  • When You've Been Doing It Wrong For The Last 5 Years
The last few weeks have been one for the books for Rebecca as she continues to recover from her emergency neck/back surgery. However, it has been during these last few weeks that God has really revealed something to her that has been different in her relationship with Him over the last few years and that has been simply how she approaches Him. The Bible mentions in several areas about how we approach Him and one thing that she has realized is that she has no been calling him Father. Can you imagine if your child addressed you by your first name? Of course, a lot of us can say we're guilty of the same thing but making this one change in our prayer life can dramatically change the way we see God and how we see ourselves in relation to Him.

  • Who Needs A Nursing Home When You Have The Holiday Inn?
A man says he’s done the research and the math, and he’s concluded that living in a Holiday Inn is a much better deal than moving into a nursing home.

“With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble. I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's $59.23 per night,” Terry Robison wrote in a Facebook post that now has 89,000 shares.

Robison, whose Facebook profile says he lives in Spring, Texas, goes on to point out the hotel often has free breakfasts and sometimes happy hours.

He argues that with the extra money, he can then pay for other meals, laundry and even tips for the hotel staff as he lives out his golden years in the hotel.

Perhaps the best part? He says you can easily move around and travel to Holiday Inns all over the world.

  • Parents, You Must Let Your Kids Do This One Thing
As parents, our main goal of raising our children is that they grow up to be independent, responsible, loving, and respectful members of society that live their lives for Christ. However, there might be one thing that we are doing for our kids that could be hindering that process and that's simply the fact that we don't allow our kids to fail. Failure is a key part of life and is the best teaching tool when it comes to growth.

Mark Twain says a quote that I love and it's this: “Good judgment is the result of experience and experience the result of bad judgment.”

So next time, whenever your kid has a decision to make. Let them handle it on their own to see what they do. They may make the right decision or they may choose the wrong one. But the important thing is that they are learning the power of consequences.

  • It's Really Not About You At All
Jeff was sharing this with Rebecca yesterday and this statement had such a profound impact on his understanding of grace. It comes from Phillip Yancey who wrote a book called, "What's So Amazing About Grace?" and here is the quote:

"In one of his last acts before death, Jesus forgave a thief dangling on a cross, knowing full well the thief had converted out of plain fear. That thief would never study the Bible, never attend synagogue or church, and never make amends to all those he had wronged. He simply said “Jesus, remember me,” and Jesus promised, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” It was another shocking reminder that grace does not depend on what we have done for God but rather what God has done for us."

Isn't that incredible? You see, if we have the mindset that we have to bring anything to the table, then we have to bring everything to the table. It's not 80/20 or 90/10. We say all the time on the show that the only thing we bring to our salvation is the sin that makes it necessary. Remember that truth today!
